This is a Hobbit thread, right? Please explain to me how The Hobbit has better racial representation than Cloud Atlas.

Seriously, apart from Django Unchained, Cloud Atlas had more POC in the cast than any other Western-made movie I saw in the last year. If you think The Hobbit is doing more for diversity than that, well lol.

I think anon is referring to the whole "using make-up to make white actors and actresses look like POCs". Maybe? I haven't seen it or heard a lot about the film...

They are - we've had a few threads about it on here before now. The whole point of Cloud Atlas was that most of the cast played 4-6 different roles, and people played characters of different genders and races to themselves in some scenes. So POC played white people and used makeup/CGI to look white, and white people played POC sometimes, and men played women sometimes, and young people played old people sometimes, and Hugo Weaving was all the villains irrespective of race and gender etc.

But I guess it's more okay to support The Hobbit than to support a film that had much more diverse cast.

Indeed! But right now, people tend to make perfect the enemy of good, and therefore what wins out is inoffensive but non-diverse projects, and that makes me sad. (not least as Cloud Atlas was so, so, so, so good.)
