The canon is male-dominated due to many reasons, therefore any adaptation is going to be the same and I can accept this. I don't need genderswapping just to appease the wimmens.

That said, they have made changes to appease the wimmens; Arwen and Galadriel's roles were expanded to include more screentimne for women and they created a whole new female character for the Hobbit. That's more than enough pandering for my taste.

so i keep wondering if maybe hollywood likes adapting things from the ~1950s so much because that way any request that they stop being sexist asswipes and show us some fucking women can be dismissed with 'well that would be pandering'

They like adapting things that will make them money. Original ideas are practically verboten in Hollywood because there's no gauge as to how successful they will be, so yes, a lot of what they remake is going to come from a time where women had lesser roles. That and "Hollywood" still doesn't give a damn about women.

hollywood is adapting just about everything because they can't come up with an original idea (I like The Great Gatsby as much as anyone but how many of them do we really need?)

None? The book barely has a story.

I love it, but it's not exactly a meaty plot worth adapting to screen. It's just PRETTY PEOPLE in pretty places during a "pretty" time.

I prefer books from before 1950 /shrugs

Hollywood also remakes films from the 70s and 80s, as well as comic books. The industry will always favour what's a safe project.

I will side-eye the Arwen-role-expansion until the end of my days.

and I'm all about female representation, but I'm going to be pissed off about losing Glorfindel to it forever

No, I have no idea why so bitter.

This.

And I will never be able to get over the fact that my initial reaction and now headcanon is that she murdered him and stole his horse. >.>;

He'll get over it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Please. He killed a Balrog and made the Witchking wet his pants. He could handle Arwen.

DA

Yup. Which is why I choose to believe he was taking a well-deserved vacation and left Asfaloth in Arwen's care.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Arwen's expanded role did her much favours in the end because, apart from Flight to the Ford, her character was defined entirely by her relationship with Aragorn. Even that desperate attempt in ROTK to connect her to the Ring plot only made her a damsel in distress that Aragorn had to save.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. Hell, I think maybe the source material did her MORE favors. I mean, most of the reason Aragorn went to reclaim is crown is so he could be worthy of her.
