Fandom character glorification

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm rather frustrated with character wank in my fandom at the moment. Have you guys ever had to deal with fans (or the official writer(s)) glorifying a fictional character to ridiculous embarrassing messianic levels?

*coughLOKIhack*

um

No, I think that just about covers it.

Snape also fits here.

My reply was just going to be "I'm in the Thor fandom."

(To clarify: in the actual show it doesn't bother me because the outlandishness and mental dissonance and the kind of awesome and endearing strangeness of such a daffy nutjob doing such Big Damn Hero things is (usually) the whole point of dialogue like that...but a lot of fans don't seem to Get It.)

Agreed. imo, the writers can be just as bad about him as the fans.

Loki and Ianto is the two I can think of right now, there is probably more. I don't actually spend a lot of time in fandom related places so

Loki is the worst one I've seen so far, to be honest. He is placed on a pedestal made of his fans, I guess.

JKR about Lily Evans.

Then again JKR has a ginger fetish.

Yes, I'm still dealing with the annoyance that is Snapefen. *sigh* Sometimes I wish I wasn't still a part of the Marauder-era fandom.

Thing with Snape is that he gets into everything in HP fandom. It's not just Marauders era. I mean even the lesbian femmeslasher contingent is overrun with Snape apologism. *Hate*

ron weasley fans overcompensate a lot because he used to get a lot of vitriol. it bugs.

Oh, yeah. Asami fans pretty much worship her as a goddess.

Re: Fandom character glorification

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Asami a lot and I consider myself a fan of her, but I think Lin was a better female character.

Hermione. Shipping H/Hr didn't help.

Re: Fandom character glorification

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god. The Harmonian characterization of Hermione. I just can't.

I was actually accused of deliberately subverting the Harmonian!Hermione (and writing her OOC, obviously) when I wrote a Hr/H/G love triangle where Hermione was... ostensibly Hermione.

Ahahahahahahahahaahahahaahahaha. Only in ever fandom of ever.

I am pretty sure that's a Thing, perhaps the one Thing, that unites all corners of fandom.

Shirley Temple

Okay so she's not a fictional character but I just had to watch the movie The Littlest Rebel and all I could think was "She is the worst Mary-Sue I've ever seen."

how has no one mentioned Stiles? did I pass over a comment mentioning him or something?

because I've watched the show and that boy is no where near the nurturing, messiah-like "pack mom" that a lot of fandom makes him out to be (seriously, where are people getting this idea? I like stiles quite a bit but a lot of the time in the show he doesn't seem to give much of a fuck about any of the werewolves that aren't scott)

In Tiger & Bunny fandom, it seems like there are a lot of people who think that either Kotetsu is a saint and therefore Barnaby is a horrible evil person, or that Kotetsu is a complete moron and a jerk and doesn't deserve anything less than contempt from the brilliant perfect Barnaby who is just so very misunderstood.

They're both written as very flawed individuals whose respective flaws put them at odds on a regular basis, but are trying in their very different ways to make a partnership work, because beneath Kotetsu's derpiness and Barnaby's attitude, they're both good-hearted but utterly broken people. I don't see why people place either on a pedestal or write either of them off.
