OP, you and me both. I just don't see it either.

I don't understand your mindset. I ship something because *I* see some sort of chemistry between the characters. I'm not worried about what anyone else thinks or the ABCs of why I think they work as a pairing.

I don't read this particular manga, I'm just addressing questioning why people ship certain characters.

It boils down to no one says you have to ship it, no matter how popular it might be, so why worry why other people *do* ship it?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But the thing is that I'm not questioning why and what other people are shipping. This... was not my intention in making this secret. If you read like that though I'm sorry, wording is not my strength.

What I wanted to say is that basically that I get irrationally irritated about this pairing because I don't understand it but want to understand it so that I can "accept" this ship if you want so.

I see it as fairly one-sided, Kise towards Aomine. Kise hero-worships Aomine and his simultaneous hero-worship and desire to surpass Aomine gives us this mess of really complex and occasionally contradictory emotions and desires. Aomine is the reason Kise started to play basketball in the first place AND the reason he didn't just lose interest like he did with every other sport he'd picked up. He wants to beat Aomine, but he doesn't want to ever see Aomine beaten and therefore get knocked off the pedestal Kise's put him on.

Whenever you've got a character with complex emotions regarding another character those two characters will be shipped, because we like to pick at complex emotional entanglements. They're interesting, and Aomine and Kise are probably the most interesting relationship in the MiraGen after Kuroko and Aomine's.

You don't have to ship it, or even see it, but it's not just a "pull two names out of a hat" relationship. There's a foundation to work with.

I don't really ship them but... yeah, this.

Also, after the incident with Haisaki is pretty obvious Aomine does care (in some way) about Kise.

or even see it, but it's not just a "pull two names out of a hat" relationship.

But I want to see and understand it because I was pretty sure I overlooked something when reading the manga and watching the anime... I guess, that didn't come through in my wording thus my "I don't see it in canon"-line. In retrospect, I think I worded it too strongly/defensively.

And thank you for your explanation. After thinking about it, that one-sided aspect is what made me tilt my head at that ship. For me personally, (relation)ships don't work when one side "feels" so much stronger than the other side. I guess, I'm just not imaginative enough. (I'm also not a fanfic writer so...)

I think that if you frolic in enough fandoms, at some point you've probably been (or will be) on the flip side of what you describe, OP -- i.e., strong love for a ship that others "can't see" ...

Once you've been on both sides it's easier to accept that sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't, and that there's nothing wrong with you unless you let other people's reactions to your apathy (or enthusiasm) bug you.

Thank you!

(Tealdeer follows):

I was able to Yoda that because it's something I've just recently had my own epiphany about. I went from a fandom where I shipped a popular-yet-reviled yaoi couple (that admittedly had little more than Foe Yay) (though I did work hard to make it plausible IC) ... and from there have splashed about in several fandoms where I feel like the only person who doesn't ship the popular slash couples. ~ And that experience has, I think, made me more tolerant overall.

tealdeering back at you! we me have been having inverse fandom journeys then since i've basically been shipping relatively obscure pairs for a while (well, in obscure-ish fandoms, which sort of doesn't help the case) and being spiteful of ~the popular slash pairing~ for no real reason other than that it got all the fanwork (i will probably never stop crying about the lack of fannish diversity in durarara!! fandom because haha that's the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned popular yet reviled foe yay). and then suddenly, i found myself shipping things that actually have fanworks for them in double-digits and it was like pure elation!!! but yeah, frolicking in multiple fandoms is definitely a learning experience :)

There are plenty of ships I don't understand OP, but in the end other people ship what interests them, and that obviously isn't always going to be what interests you. That's perfectly okay.

It doesn't really matter anyway, but if you really want to know I guess you could ask anon somewhere and get an answer once and for all. Maybe that way you'd understand the pairings fans a little better and seeing it wouldn't agitate you so much.

Or just learn to move past it. *shrugs*

I don't get this way of thinking. There's plenty of popular ships I don't get myself, but I'm sure people think the same about ships I like. If you don't like it, no reasoning would change your mind.

It's not that I don't like it per se. I don't understand it, that's why I don't ship it. And I don't necessarily want someone to change my mind; the thing is that I just want to understand where people are coming from with their ship since I like everything to make sense, at least to me. But one of the comments above definitely explains a lot of things I was wondering. I still don't ship it but at least I understand it.

I was wondering about...

i don't ship it romantically and but i totally get why people do. it's one of those complicated, intense and arguably doomed relationships that has its own draw i guess and i've shipped that sort of dynamic in other series so i see its appeal. in canon/fanon, i enjoy their bromance a lot (or whatever extent of it existed in their middle school days anyway) and that they really do respect each other as opponents/players--then again, i think the latter is a given for any of the GoM members.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see it either... In fact, I think Kasamatsu/Kise would make much more sense, but what can you do, AoKise is much more popular for some reason.
