I agree with you, and this comes from someone who loves the stage musical. Seriously, all the people who flipped out over it need to listen to Gerard Butler in the 2004 film version of The Phantom of the Opera---that was 100 times worse than Russell's voice.

I really hated that movie, but this is such a weird argument to make, anon. "But this other guy in this other movie is so much worse!"

Because there's a lot of fandom overlap, and people often don't understand the need to have star power in a Hollywood film. I believe they were saying that they had a lack of perspective when it came to Gerard Butler, and now maybe they know better.

But...but Butler's "Music of the Night" makes my ears bleed. Do I hafta?

Yes, you do, for perspective. And no one can ruin "The Music of the Night", not even him. Hell, not even a barbershop quarter can ruin "The Music of the Night" (http://youtu.be/bZlE16IpX7Q). Because it is flawless.

I have perspective. I think Butler was awful. I think Crowe was awful. His singing wasn't terrible, but his acting was poor.

And barbershop quartets are awesome.

Everything about the film version of Phantom was horrible. Ugh.

This. And to me, Phantom was even worse since he's in-canon supposed to be the "Angel of Music." At least with Les Mis I can make some excuses for him as a policeman.
