That's funny, because I actually found him distracting for exactly that reason -- Phillip Quast, for example, has a sharpness and a command in his voice that to me is appropriate for Javert. Russell Crowe sounded too much like he was focusing on the singing when he was singing, and it was him I found too melodic.

Exactly! Like you could hear Russell struggling to sing at times and it wasn't really pleasant to listen to. I prefer Javert to have more of a rich quality to his voice and I just did not get that with Russell Crowe.

I didn't even mind the obvious struggling, although I agree it was there, because I can see how people would find that sort of IC for Javert -- it was the lack of enunciation and the sort of muffled, eliding quality to his voice that took me out of it. Like... he sounded to me a bit like he was singing along to the karaoke CD (or the Glee version?) while everyone else was actually singing the musical.

He sounded like he was yawning or something.

Which...is a vocal trick, I guess. Works okay in rock music. But Javert needs to have precise enunciation. Doesn't matter how well he sings, just so long as he sounds like there's force behind every word and syllable.
