A/B/O

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I told myself I'd never write it, but I forgot to nix it when requesting a longfic bingo card, and so there it is. Since I figure writing the prompts I don't like first will make the whole thing easier, that's what I'm doing.

I don't suppose anyone has any resources on how to do the trope well? And if not that, examples of what has already been done? I'm looking at my options here. :/

Omega puts on a hazmet suit shutting out all the pheremones and rapes everybody.

I've heard people say they want more femslash a/b/o.

You're planning to write long fic about a trope you don't like? I suspect that isn't going to work out too well. I assume you already know the basics of the trope? If you don't like the basic idea of it then reading fics and a 1-2-3 guide isn't going to be much fun for you, so I recommend figuring out exactly what it is you don't like about A/B/O and either eliminating it from the equation or finding some way to make it work for your kinks.

AYRT

Longfic in this case just means more than 5000 words, and I could write 5000 words about literally anything. Bingo cards usually work out well for me for this reason; I've never had a problem meeting minimum word counts.

But good advice, thank you. Since it's mostly the rape culture tones I have problems with, I'm sure I could find a way to work around that. :)

Ahhh, that sounds like much less of a slog than I was imagining, so I'll just wish you luck :)

Do something that isn't your standard A/B/O. Omegas topping Alphas, Alphas and Omegas fighting against their hormones, femslash A/B/O, an Omega that can't produce lubrication...

I've actually seen several stories of most of these, except the femslash. So yes, femslash.

an Omega that can't produce lubrication...

Omegas produce magical butt lube?

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WRITING THIS AGAIN? Just... gah

Gaaahhhhh

lmao, how is that even the weirdest part of a/b/o

Make all the characters betas, showing that you don't have to be an alpha or omega to have a happy and fulfilling sex life in an A/B/O world.

Write something serious dealing with the implications it would have on society as a whole.

I recently found myself with a plot-bunny that wouldn't die, and ended up writing an A/B/O fic. What I found worked was writing the characters pretty much the same as normal, unless they're being affected by some sort of pheromone or biological factor. If there's a trope that annoys you in the genre, subvert or explore it. Don't feel obligated to write sex unless you want to or the plot demands it.

If you want a link to the story I wrote, I can offer it; I'm not going to claim that it's an example of the genre well done, but it's been fairly well-received.

Please make alphas and omegas different but equal. Don't normalize rape (this whole 'I'm an alpha, I just can't help myself' crap has got to be ackowledged as rape instead ~true love~). Have an omega pursue an alpha instead of the other way around! Have the alpha try to romance the omega instead of being a huge creep! Have omegas be the dominant part of relationships!

....sorry. XD I actually like a/b/o fic, I just wish people would play around with it more (and also stop with the rape = love but that's more of a fandom thing, I think).

Re: A/B/O

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe try subverting a lot of the common tropes you see in A/B/O fics? Play with a different sort of dynamic, different ways for alphas to relate to betas/omegas/each other, that sort of thing. I've always thought taking the sexual element out of the picture and exploring the power dynamics (sans all the ridiculous sexual stuff people like to put in - the self-lubrication/heat/yadda yadda) would be interesting. Alternatively, just leave out the things you don't like and focus on other elements. You don't have to do the usual self-lubrication/etc thing; you can just as easily write a fic about all alphas/omegas/betas.

TL;DR: Either leave out or subvert the things about the trope you don't like.

(Alphas mate with alphas in the wolf world anyway, right? =D)

How about doing it as body horror, with noncon and the reluctant omega being bred and soulbonded against his or her will? Treat it as something creepy and awful rather than something romantic.

I thought you mean the Japanese personality-based-on-blood-type trope.
And then I remembered. *sheds a tear*

I read this really cool (don't judge me) SPN RPF fic about Misha Collins as an asexual omega (IIRC). And he was still married to Vicki and aah it's so good. A nice deconstruction.

So an asexual or even just a low-libido person in an A/B/O world could be interesting.

Re: A/B/O

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
If this happened to me and I couldn't get out of it, I'd probably be a bad person and write a fic about someone who was the neutral type and struggling because it turned out their preferences weren't all decided for them and they had to decide for themselves.

There is a neutral type, right? It's just no one ever writes it I think because that kind of skirts the kink.

Re: A/B/O

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
The B is the neutral type, I think. The A is the SUPER PENIS, and the O is the SUPER (USUALLY ASS) VAGINA.
