Wow. This secret makes no sense in retrospect. Let me clarify.

I started to find myself thinking "Oh god, Britta would so judge me, I am FAILING AS A FEMINIST AND ACTIVIST." (I used to be a really militant liberal activist in my late teens and early twenties, and have fallen out of it due to health issues, so seeing her just reminded me of my old ambitions.) Then Season 3 came along and showed without question how truly ridiculous and petty her activist ambitions had become (or had always been) and I took a deep breath, because somehow the pressure was off.

AH. I think I get it.

I know a lot of people think that Britta was made stupid in season 3, but I just think that she was exaggerated as a character, you know? I think the show did the same thing with Troy and Abed in season 3 too.

Anyway, Britta represents a lot of White Girl Feminism and idk if that's intentional or not, but yeah. I love Britta and I think she's a really funny character, but she's also just as flawed as all the other characters. Even back in season 1 when she was going on about the journalists in.... uh... whatever country it was and then after Annie and Shirley organized the protest, she admitted that she'd never done anything about that situation.

I've always read it as intentional, that's kind of why I love her as a character. She's sincere but ineffectual - and actually I think it's been that way from the beginning. I feel like a lot of her character development revolves around being confronted with her hypocrisy and lack of nuance and coming out wiser for it.

Yeah, "sincere but ineffectual" is something she is always been, but I think it's undeniable that from late season 2 onwards she's also been dumbed down a lot. Quotes like "I don't have 3D vision" or "It's like Stalin back in Russia time" are not sophisticated commentaries on the hypocrisy of white activism, they are meant to make her look like a moron.
They even had Jeff say "you seemed smarter when I met you" because, well, duh.

Ehhh. . .I'm still kind of hesitant to say that the end of season 3 was really 'hypocritical' Britta so much as in a few episodes she was kind of watered down and dumbed down, but for a lot of season 3 I'm with you anon, I loved seeing her hypocrisy and struggling to find her sense of self.
