His performance never felt convincing to me - with a few of the Javerts I've seen, you really get the feeling that it is the character's and actor's life goal to recapture Valjean, which makes the inevitable breakdown of his worldview all the more believeable. With Russell Crowe, it always just felt like, "Hey, it's that guy I'm supposed to be after. Stop, you. Come back here... eh, oh well." Especially in his rendition of Stars. I just didn't believe him.

At some points he did seem mildly interested rather than obsessed.

JFC, Javert isn't suppose to actually be obsessed with the guy. Does he want to catch him when they meet? Yes. Because Javert is obsessed with the law. Is he going to go entirely out of his way if the guy's vanished into thin air? Not really, there are other criminals.

Only Valjean is supposed to think Javert is obsessed. It's why he jumps to the conclusion of Javert being the person outside instead of the possibility of thieves, despite being in a time when the world was in turmoil and he's HANDING OUT CHARITY and he doesn't even entertain the idea that someone followed him home and waited for night to fall. Nope, they obviously have some connection to Javert!!!!

But Javert is supposed to be obsessed.

"Stars" starts out and ends with a mention of val Jean, but it's mostly him singing about how Order is All, and anyone who breaks The Order Of Things should be struck down with no mercy.

Crowe, IMHO, didn't do a very good job of conveying that obsession.

I kid, I kid.

Even if he wasn't supposed to be obsess with Valjean, Russell Crowe never made me believe he was obsessed with the law. I saw no passion, no fire, no obsession in his performance.

Musical Javert is obsessed, Novel Javert is more of a cop who loves his job.

And movie Javert isn't strictly musical Javert, or he wouldn't have been half as competent as he was.

...Except it's not Javert's life goal to capture just Valjean. That this has become the popular interpretation burns my biscuits. He doesn't become obsessed with Valjean until much later in the story, and before then it's literally chance meetings. He doesn't hunt relentlessly only for Valjean. He happens to meet him again and again, and he's mad that his otherwise spotless record has this mark on it. That's as far as it goes. If he can't find any leads, he's not going to sit in his study and mourn. There are other criminals out there he can take down in the meantime, and he'll keep his ear to the ground.

Like, he didn't expect to meet Valjean at the damn barricade. He was there for another reason entirely.
