INCOMING WALL OF TEXT
Basically, the afterlife in His Dark Materials is a dreary, dismal, blasted plain. Before you get there, you must cross a river and leave a piece of your soul behind. In the case of people from Lyra's and Lee Scoresby's world, that piece of your soul is represented by your daemon; usually, this daemon vanishes into thin air the moment you die. Hester is Lee Scoresby's daemon. This means you walk into the world of the dead missing half of your being and are entirely lost, nothing but a gray, miserable ghost amid other lost, miserable ghosts. These ghosts are tormented by monster Harpies.
Long story short, the still-living Lyra and Will come to the world of the dead. They see how terrible things are and must leave (to save the universe) and, with the aid of the Harpies, travel across the world of the dead until they can open up a door that leads to all the other worlds. Once the ghosts leave the world of the dead, they are blown apart to be one with all the worlds and all the loved ones who went before them, and there's a very sweet scene with the particles of Lee Scoresby reuniting with Hester, the other part of his soul.
I need to reread His Dark Materials.
