The fandom that made you become devoted, or alternately, kind of crazy

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
So I was kind of a casual fandomer up until I found one of my fandoms. Then I wound up devoted to the community, the canon, the success of the canon and the creators, etc. Now I have two or three fandoms like this, but my original is still the one that makes me the most emotional and feels the most like family.

Has this happened to you? What was the fandom? Or have you managed to keep it casual?

Due South, back in the day. I was all over that, and I haven't done anything with it in at least a decade, and I still love it.

Happened to me when I found the utattemita fandom on tumblr. (Which is probably a huge part of why I love tumblr so much.) I went from occasionally browsing tumblr to spending most of my day on it, posting translations and actually interacting with other fans there and stuff like that. It probably helped that it was a small fandom and I got quite a bit of attention as I did most of the translations back then.

Avengers fandom kind of grabbed me by the throat and made me write all the fic. Even finishing most of the stories I start!

I was like that with Quantum Leap. I got all kinds of nuts about it, after missing the first three seasons when it started to get in trouble. I wrote in, postcard after postcard to try and help it stay on the air, I donated to an ad the fans took out in Variety, and also donated for a farewell ad, also placed in Variety. I cried at the ending like a little girl and to this day, I can't watch the finale without a tear in my eye.

I assume it's going to be the same for the Supernatural fandom. While they no longer need anyone to write in and save the show, I'm pretty nuts about it right now, having gone to my first convention four years ago, when I wound up in tears because Jared had to withdraw from the con and have been dying to go back ever since. I don't even want to think about what I'll be like at the finale...I see depression for weeks coming.

Lets see...Lord of the Rings, Stargate Atlantis, and Supernatural.

Lord of the Rings was probably the first fandom that felt like it ~consumed~ me, and I was into analyzing every single thing in Stargate Atlantis. As for Supernatural, wow did I spend too much time watching con videos and interviews with the cast back in the day.

I'm mostly more chill with my fandoms now. ...Mostly, The Hobbit has brought back some of that ~fire~ I had in my youth.

OP here. Yeah, um. SPN is the one I mentioned in my first comment.

SPNFamily is almost as dysfunctional as the Winchester family tbh.

Well, I was sort of always that sort of fan about everything I've been into, from when I was a little kid. When I found the internet, and the Final Fantasy fandom more specifically, I finally had an EXCUSE. (The FF main theme makes me a little misty every time I hear it, and I intend to use it as the processional at my wedding (my fiancee has agreed, since she picked the recessional) because it feels simultaneously like coming home to something familiar and starting out on a bold new adventure, and has since the first game came out in the States.)

Though the one that feels the most like family to me for the last several years is Vagrant Story. It's tiny and hardly anyone thinks about it anymore, but those of us who knew it never forget. Perhaps appropriately, it never quite dies, and can pop up again at any time. ;)

Crazy in a productive, socially acceptable way or crazy as in I don't leave my house because all my friends are imaginary way?

The only fandom I got too deep into has more or less quieted down. I've never really been super intense about fandoms.

I have like two that I'm really into that have fun communities with nice people. Technically though I've been out of fandom for a long time now and just started to get back into it again.

Uhm.

Partly Mega Man, mostly EXE.

Partly Pokemon.

Different aspects of both, though.

Last Exile,it has completely taken over my brain. I tend to get really devoted to certain fadoms, but I don't think it's ever been this bad before.
