Yes. This. My husband went through a phase where he bought a pile of Really Serious Movies. Then we decided to watch everything we own. So many movies about miserable people making other people miserable. It was ridiculous. I had to stop and watch nothing but fluff for a couple of months.

*rofl* This is the perfect description of any serious movie out there. Especially those psychological ones in which the background is dead silent and you get to watch people basically move through their lives as if in RL only with added gloom, unhappy relationships and unreasonable personalities/moods.

A History of Violence. Magnolia. The Wrestler. American Beauty. I could go on. It's a litany of misery.

And I will add: Those are all excellently made movies full of superb acting and writing and directing and cinematography. They're just also thoroughly shot through with misery. The Wrestler put me in a funk for two weeks. Hit every one of my contact-depression buttons.

That's why you need to alternate between serious and fluff.
No one's saying you need to spend all of your evenings watching Holocaust movies.
But if you only watch fluff or terrible action movies, you're missing out on a lot of good things.

(Which leads us back to the OP's point that not watching a movie because you're not attracted to the lead is terribly shallow and will make you miss out on many things you might have enjoyed.)
