"weeaboo" etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
So someone responded to a secret a few days ago about someone who was some part British, calling them a "Britaboo." Is that a thing now?

I've also seen Koreaboo, for, I guess, really annoying Kpop fans?

Do you know of any other countries that have 'boos?

And where does the word Weeaboo come from anyway? Also, won't it start to sound weird when all the other countries have [country name]aboos, like Britaboo and Koreaboo, and the Japanese version doesn't have anything to do with Japan in the name?

I thought the term for someone who is enthused with English culture was "anglophile" (I realize that Britain and England are different; don't hurt me). It's certainly gotten more prominent as a subculture over the past few years, and as a result anglophiles have been getting the same sort of mockery as weeaboos for not really understanding the culture they're obsessed with.

Weeaboo is a nonsense word from a Perry Bible Fellowship strip. I've heard it gained its meaning when a 4chan moderator added a filter that auto-changed 'Wapanese' (a frequent accusation at the time) to 'Weeaboo'. The term stuck.

I've heard 'Teaboo' as an alternative to 'Britaboo', and I think 'Ouiaboo' for Francophiles is perfect. My best friend sometimes accuses me of being a 'Chinkaboo' but I figure 'Chiaboo' might sound less offensive? idk.

Teaboo and Ouiaboo are adorable.

The word "Weeaboo" came from 4chan. "Wapanese" was a common insult, someone (I think moot) got annoyed and filtered it to "weeaboo", and of course it immediately became a substitute. It got applied to other countries because the Internet is deeply stupid sometimes - following the same process by which I've seen the term "gayfag" on 4chan.

It was actually snacks, a mod, who wordfiltered it, from the Perry Bible Fellowship comic (which was already pretty famous by that time).
