Swedish anon here; I think OP may be Swedish and maybe forgot to mention that Swedish society tends to see itself as a kind of nice, socially aware country where racism is not seen as acceptable and thus is not racist ... Which, of course, only blinds people to their own racism (e.g. "I don't consider myself a racist, so nothing I say or do can be racist, up to and including using racial slurs"; "I'm not a racist! Neo-Nazis and Sverigedemokraterna [a Nationalist political party] are racists!").

I could write an essay on this, but suffice to say there are a lot of good or at least neutral intentions combined with a truly facepalm-worthy lack of actual awareness plus some tendencies towards instinctive face-saving going around. They do not mix well.

Specifically, a number of cases of race-fail got a lot of coverage in the media last year. Sometimes the fail was in the news reports themselves, and there was fail in the reactions to the news stories pretty much every time - cries of "Political correctness has gone too far!", "What about free speech?" etc etc, which were met with ::rolleye:: and exasperated requests to get over it and STFU already from anti-racists.

TL;DR: Sweden, as a society, thinks it is not racist. Unsurprisingly, this has turned out to be wrong, especially in the last year.

Other Swedish anon says: yeah, pretty much. I'm still rolling my eyes at the people who act like SD somehow weren't voted into Riksdagen, they just ~appeared~ there and will go away if we ignore them.

I can see why the OP equated Sweden and Korea on that score. Though, Sweden and Korea are hardly alone in that respect.

AYRT: Thanks for explaining! I wondered for a moment if I missed some thread about Sweden being great or something.
