I like all the fic of Stiles, be he awesome, regular human, werewolf, merfolk or demon. But I get your point. Stiles is BAMF-y just the way he is.

The thing that bothers me about a lot of these stories that they seem to ignore that Stiles is perfectly badass as he his. He doesn't need to be super cool as a cucumber under pressure ninja skills magical whatever. In the show he's wacky and flaily and unsure but still a BAMF, and yeah, I agree that I wish more of that transferred into the fic.

The rest of the cast could be other vegetables.

Or maybe they aren't. Maybe he's the only vegetable. And it's a Thing, because this is the first vegetable student at this high school. Bigotry? I'm sure there'd be plenty. And the bullying, oh lord -- the kids fill up water bottles with Italian dressing, spray him in the hallways, then make as if they're going to eat him. The ACLU has to get involved. VEGETABLE RIGHTS.

I mostly dislike them because normal human canon!Stiles has such incredible potential to be a ruthless, manipulative schemer that I really fail to see the need for demon!Stiles and stuff like that.

Absolutely. Most of the demon!Stiles gifs I've seen would be excellent dialogue for just regular old sarcastic and bitter Stiles.

YES! Oh god, I'm so glad there are other people out there who see that. It's so frustrating to see Stiles portrayed so often in fic as nothing more than this sweet, nurturing caretaker who wouldn't hurt a fly and just wants everyone to get along.

Yes!! If I see one more fic where Stiles is given Scott's personality, I'll scream. Stiles is loyal, yeah, but only to a very select group of loved ones, and he's often willing to simply discard everyone else. He's cunning and manipulative, not cuddly and moral. That's what makes him so interesting! It's also his place in the show. He and Scott work so well as a team because Scott's the guy who decides to take action and Stiles is the guy who figures out how to get it done; Scott argues from a moral standpoint and Stiles argues from a more ruthless, logical position and they manage to balance each other out pretty well. If you give Stiles Scott's morality and power, it just... doesn't work so well. Why use fic to take away everything that makes the character so wonderful and fascinating in canon? If you want to write about a kid who worries about everybody else's safety and folds people under his wing, go stan Scott.

Stiles is to Teen Wolf as Xander is to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

He is your... we'll call it a 'Window Character'

He's the human character that keeps both the other characters and the show grounded. He's the character that we as an audience can best relate to, because he handles situations as we would. He was the anchor for the entire show.

Stiles is this in the same way Xander was. They're extremely important to the show so that it still feels realistic and so that the audience still finds it relateable. He has weaknesses, he doesn't seem all powerful. He's all too human in a dangerous world.

/That/ is what makes the character interesting and so goddamn likeable.

Yeah, there's always a normal -- a Zeppo -- in this kind of show. Stiles in TW, Xander in Buffy, Sokka in A:TLA... it works dramatically, and that's why writers keep doing it.

I'm kind of a fan of all the possible Stiles right now. However, I do think that Stiles has more going for him than just a bumbling nature. He appears to have an epic level of google-fu, some magical abilities with garden dirt, and be able to take a starter-motor to the brain and still keep going. So maybe he's not a demon or a ninja but he's not exactly joe-normal either.

I'll read fic with magic! or demon!Stiles, but I'd never want that to become canon (well, not always-a-demon!Stiles... Supernatural-style demonic possession, on the other hand, is always fun). A large part of Stiles' appeal is that he's a normal guy fighting to survive in this wild world, and he refuses to back out or give up. It makes him scrappy, you know?

No idea who that is, but if you mean limited/no magical ability, yeah, I think that's canon. Jeff Davis, when queried, said that Stiles isn't magical -- mountain ash is.

Agreed. But he doesn't have ADHD either. That was apparently a joke added, and fandom has run with it. ...at least according to the actor himself.
