I mostly dislike them because normal human canon!Stiles has such incredible potential to be a ruthless, manipulative schemer that I really fail to see the need for demon!Stiles and stuff like that.

Absolutely. Most of the demon!Stiles gifs I've seen would be excellent dialogue for just regular old sarcastic and bitter Stiles.

YES! Oh god, I'm so glad there are other people out there who see that. It's so frustrating to see Stiles portrayed so often in fic as nothing more than this sweet, nurturing caretaker who wouldn't hurt a fly and just wants everyone to get along.

sweet, nurturing caretaker

For the life of me, I cannot understand how this came to be a thing in fic. It doesn't make me angry or anything, it just confuses me utterly. Also, I agree with this thread.

Exactly. Stiles is a pretty self-centred guy who only cares about his dad, Scott and Lydia, who hates everybody else and whose first reaction to a problem is "let's kill him". There's a reason I ship Peter/Stiles, it's because they'd be unstoppable (and really kind of horrifying) together. I'm so much more interested in Stiles' darker side getting explored than in pack mum!Stiles.

Stiles is a fairly self-centered guy, but hates everybody? Maybe, just doesn't really care about people he doesn't know and hates/dislikes people who give him a reason. And while he does tend to go with the "kill him" or "just let him be killed" in words, in actions he does try to save or help people he supposedly doesn't care about - which, yes, you could argue that he does it from a selfish standpoint or in order to help people he does care about.

Different anon here, but I have a theory about this. I don't think Stiles is a bad, immoral guy -- just pragmatic and focused intensely on his people to the exclusion of all else. This is pretty value-neutral behavior. Take the case of Jackson, for example, where killing him right off the bat instead of saving him would have been wrong, but on the other hand if Scott had killed him when Stiles first suggested it, several swim team kids and a station full of deputies would still be alive. We could spend all day debating risking lives to do the "right" thing vs terminating the possibility for further slaughter by doing the "wrong" thing. imo, the key to judging this kind of moral quandary in simplistic fiction like Teen Wolf lies in how the canon treats in. In Teen Wolf, Scott is the moral compass, and the universe awards him for making impractical, morality-based decisions. Contrast this to a show like Firefly, where Mal is a surprisingly fitting Stiles analogue; he makes pragmatic decisions to protect a select group of people to whom he displays intense loyalty, and excepting egregious evil, it doesn't really matter if he does the wrong thing by somebody else. So I'm not making any objective judgments of Stiles, but rather in context of the way TW conceptualizes right and wrong.

Okay basically that was a really long premise for my theory, which is predicated on my understanding of Stiles as good-dude-with-specific-priorities. I think Stiles always makes the right decision in the urgent situations he gets thrown into, but he's unlikely to voluntarily put himself into a situation where he has to make that kind of choice. So, Derek gets slashed across the neck by the kanima, and Stiles puts himself through hell keeping him afloat. But if someone had come to him beforehand and said, "Hey, I have a feeling Derek's in trouble," I bet you anything it wouldn't have triggered his crisis response, and he'd just be like, yeah well who cares? You know? And that's why he can fight to save someone he insists at other times should just die, and why he always makes the right decision at the end... maybe because his best self comes out when he has to make snap decisions in the heat of the moment.

+100000

This is beautifully expressed and I couldn't agree more. *rolls around in the meta*

If you ever want to write some Stiles-centred fic with this pitch-perfect characterization, I will be all over it.

Thank you bb! I've spent a lot of time soothing my mind after reading fic wherein Stiles is wonderful & ethical by composing head!meta about what a cynical, goal-oriented, Slytherin-esque little shit he is. <3 That's the way I love him.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-25 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This is great meta. I love that you mentioned how a character's actions are always framed by a narrative.

And I agree about your entire second paragraph. Stiles is not a psycho. He's not going to shrug and walk away when someone is dying in front of his eyes, but he's not going to rush out of his comfy room and risk his own life to save someone else (unless that person is one of the few people he cares about).

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Also at times I think Stiles just likes to talk shit. I think it's easy for him to say he'd want Jackson dead, but I don't see him being able to bring himself to actually kill Jackson or ask Scott to.

Which kind of plays into your thing with saying he might be able to let Jackson be killed if it was out of his hands.

Damn, I really want to watch this show now.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-01-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
You are not alone. Here, have a fic: Really. Fucking. Practical. Not really the manipulative schemer, but definite ruthless.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-25 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-25 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!! If I see one more fic where Stiles is given Scott's personality, I'll scream. Stiles is loyal, yeah, but only to a very select group of loved ones, and he's often willing to simply discard everyone else. He's cunning and manipulative, not cuddly and moral. That's what makes him so interesting! It's also his place in the show. He and Scott work so well as a team because Scott's the guy who decides to take action and Stiles is the guy who figures out how to get it done; Scott argues from a moral standpoint and Stiles argues from a more ruthless, logical position and they manage to balance each other out pretty well. If you give Stiles Scott's morality and power, it just... doesn't work so well. Why use fic to take away everything that makes the character so wonderful and fascinating in canon? If you want to write about a kid who worries about everybody else's safety and folds people under his wing, go stan Scott.
