There are plenty of people already reacting to you, but I have to comment on the fact that some possessions far more than physical things. If my parents had smashed my laptop before I was old enough to know about backing up my hard drive, I would have lost all of my writing, which even as a child was the most important thing in my life. That's not just taking away Internet access and PC games. The kind of agony that would have caused me would sure as hell have been abuse.

I have already made the exception elsewhere in the thread for things that have a strong emotional value--however, can you not think of an example where it is appropriate?

What if you were using your computer to talk to adult strangers? If they caught you, and warned you not to, and you kept doing it anyway, do you think they would be justified in punishing you by breaking your hard drive? Think of how dangerous those actions are to the child--is the punishment too severe then?

Then you take the computer away, locke it up, or supervise the child's computer time. There are many options besides outright destroying the computer.

You don't even have to take the entire computer away, just the internet. Router settings can do that just fine.

Thank you. If you're a parent and your kids are allowed computer and internet access, you should know all of your operating system's and router's security's settings and features and how to use them.
