Threatening to destroy your kids things is not child abuse, unless it's "you're going to have to sleep on the floor because I'M SETTING YOUR BED ON FIRE". If they try to make some big scary show out of it, that's abuse through intimidation.

But breaking their TV or laptop for being disobedient is non-abusive and non-harmful.

Can you point out why it is harmful? Without coming up with some sort of bullshit like them setting their shit on fire and making them watch, or violently smashing open the television set in front of them? Because I already clearly said that IS abusive, on the side of threatening them and intimidating them.

Yeah, but the same parent breaking the laptop could later be the same parent who performs an honor killing on his/her child because she snuck out late to be with a boy.

My mom is incredibly emotionally abusive and did a lot of shit I'm not a fan of, but she never broke my things. She paid for them. She could've taken them and used them herself. It's still punishment, but there isn't damage done to the actual item.

Who cares if there's damage done to the item? If you don't want it to be sold again, or are not interested in selling it, giving it away, or what not, who cares if they break it? It isn't somehow emotionally damaging. It might strike you as stupid, but it's not evil or bad parenting or abusive. All forms of punishment can be abused in some way, but this one is not inherently bad.

Holy shit what is wrong with you. No breaking your kids things (which they may of bought with their own money) is not okay and not acceptable response for a child 'misbehaving'. It's a manipulative abusive response. Taking your child/teenagers tv/laptop/books away for a duration of time is appropriate.

Someone destroying their kids property is abusive.

If you bought them something, you have the right to break it if they did not disobey. It's not really any different than selling it off, only you can't get any money. I wouldn't personally do it, but if a parent did it they've done nothing wrong.

Can you name any reason why it's bad? I already made the exception for parents breaking things violently as a show of intimidation or aggression. I'm speaking purely about someone who, say, magnetized a TV screen or something. Shit, they could drop a brick on it if they really wanted. It hardly matters.

Not true. I have a lot of problems controlling my own anger, not entirely but partly because this very thing happened to me as a kid. When the way to relieve any frustrations with your kid is by taking them out on the inanimate objects in the kids room, and especially on stuff the kid loves or cares about, then that's what you learn as a kid: that type of violent, destructive behavior is normal and to be expected. It isn't, though. A parent breaking the kid's stuff, either in anger or for punishment (or in many cases, both) most definitely has an effect on the kid, in spite of what you may believe.

But you're assuming it as some sort of enraged attack. Some anon up there gave an example of their father breaking the phone cable in their room to prevent them from sneaking on the computer when they shouldn't (you can read the example for more details). This was a punishment delivered because of repeated abuses of rules and privileges, not an act of enraged aggression because your child was not obeying you.

For example, some very violent, problematic children are sent to military school (although one wouldn't exactly call it a punishment). This is a very severe action that should only ever be done for children who are very severe themselves--the kind who are threatening to murder their parents or siblings, who have tried to burn down their house, and so on.

If the parent were to try and send their child to military school because their child was caught breaking and entering the school at night, the action was very, very disobedient, but the punishment would be incredibly egregious and THEN it would be abusive.

But is military school itself abusive? No, I don't think so.

Nor is breaking your child's phone or laptop. There are appropriate situations for it, though they are rare.

No, it's not "non-harmful". Someone destroying your things to teach you a lesson is a fucking threat. Make the parent unhappy? And they break your things. The implicit threat can be taken that if you continue to make them unhappy, they might break you next time.

Or hey, maybe that was just my charming parents who did, in fact, break my shit, throw things around, and destroy my stuff to "teach me a lesson". If they got REALLY unhappy with me, they'd actually start beating me and kicking me and so forth.

Your parents showing any signs of destructive behavior in regards to you misbehaving is fucking scary.

If you respond to a child's disobediance by breaking things that belong to them, the message you're sending is as follows: disobeying me results in violence, towards you or the things you care about. There is nothing you have and nothing you love that I cannot permanently take from you if you make me angry. Do not get attached to anything, because it may be the next thing I destroy.

A child will respond to that with fear. Of you. They will be right to. Because it is violent, harmful and emotionally abusive behaviour.

There are plenty of people already reacting to you, but I have to comment on the fact that some possessions far more than physical things. If my parents had smashed my laptop before I was old enough to know about backing up my hard drive, I would have lost all of my writing, which even as a child was the most important thing in my life. That's not just taking away Internet access and PC games. The kind of agony that would have caused me would sure as hell have been abuse.

How is destroying a kid's belongings for being disobedient not making a big scary show of a parent's power over them for the purpose of intimidation? It's completely unnecessary, because you can just take away the privilege of a laptop or television if it's being misused or is no longer deserved. Breaking an item just to prove it's yours to break seems like going that extra mile to be spiteful to no sensible end, and that kind of mindset lends itself nicely to eventual abusive.

You may not think it's abusive but it's pretty childish and irresponsible and just bad parenting. Teaching your child that violence - and yes, breaking and destroying things is violence - is an acceptable reaction is not okay. All you are teaching the kid is to fear their parent, not any valuable lesson on proper ways to behave. It's bad parenting. There is a very fine line between abusive and plain bad parenting.

Wasn't sure where to put this in the 'destroying kids' things' thread, but I was bemused by all the examples given of destroying - or taking away - cell phones. I'm sure this marks me as a child of my times, but when mine reach the point of their lives when they're old enough to go places without supervision, I will make damn sure they have their cell phones with them.

Now, cutting back/eliminating texting or data plans? Replacing the phone with the kiddie style that will only call parents' or emergency numbers? All reasonable punishments. But it's a fact of life that having a reliable means of communication can sometimes be the only thing that gets you out of a tight spot, and it's not something I can see depriving my offspring of as punishment.
