Off topic, but whenever I've listened to fanmixes they've just seemed like the author took random songs they like and threw them together. I never saw the connection to the fandom or character they were supposed to be about. :/

Anyway, why not go ahead and make the fanmix anyway? I'm sure there are some fans in your fandom that like the same music as you, and it doesn't hurt to try.

I will admit, I've done that, but it was because I wanted to take my favorite songs, and see if I could write a cohesive fic that incorporated the themes of all of them in some fashion. But when there's no fic behind it, it's kind of eh?

Unless the person takes the time to write out why they chose each song, I like those people, because then even if I don't agree, I do get to see a peak into their mindset, which is fun. :3

Is there a fanmix community where you can post about your music and fannish interests? I bet if you mentioned the kind of music you like, you'd find other people interested in the same things.

I would really like to know this as well!

I've found a lot of good fanmixes on 8tracks.com...

This is the one I like and stuff is tagged by fandom.

I really enjoy making fanmixes, but mostly for the meta and trying to arrange the songs in a way that sounds appealing/seems to progress. I have a few playlists of music I associate to original characters that I quite enjoy. Make them for yourself and then share them if you feel comfortable!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be so here for your metal fanmixes. I'd say just go ahead, what's the worst that could happen?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it anyway. For you.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You should totally make your metal fanmixes! And then maybe people who wouldn't thought of it before will learn about new bands and songs and start to fall in love with metal, until their incorporating it too!

All the fanmixes I've encountered in my fandom were like 40% Taylor Swift... it's getting old!

Do it anyway! I have the same issue, and I feel like the odd one out for not posting soft indie stuff with whiny voices. I need some bass and some drums in my mixes, man. Trust me there's plenty of people who share your tastes :)

I just mind when the music just doesn't go with the atmosphere of the setting. Pop and indie rock songs may be okay for some show that's set in our world in the present, but not for a fantasy or a sci-fi or a western setting. I feel like most fanmixes are just songs the OP likes with lyrics that are vaguely relevant to the character/pairing. Not songs that are actually fitting.

Me too. Sometimes it can work but I love it when, say, someone uses early music for a mix for a Medieval fantasy canon.

Maybe I'm in the right fandoms, but I've seen many metal, classic rock, current rock fanmixes.

I've never understood the point of fanmixes. But I'll say, if you've got something new and interesting to unleash on fandom, I'd say go for it. Your mixes may not be super-popular, but I bet the fans who like them, will really, really like them. And you may get some converts to your way of thinking and maybe even start a new trend.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I get you, OP. I'm okay with some indie rock, but I feel like a lot of the same songs get reused, especially rock songs. How many times can we reuse "The Scientist"? And I remember finding a Thor fanmix that included lighter music, including some showtunes, and it became my favorite fanmix ever after finding way too many Loki/Thor mixes that were nothing but depressing rock songs.

I wish people would utilize showtunes in fanmixes more often. Yes, this probably means my taste in music sucks, but I'd like it anyway. There should be a fanmix challenge to make a mix with purely showtunes and/or Disney songs.

OP, I would love to see more metal in mixes. Just go for it; there's probably a whole lot of fans who want to use genres besides pop/indie/rock but feel the same way as you. One mix could open the floodgates...

I'd like to see more classical music in fanmixes. Also for music videos. But after being flamed for using classical music in a fan video once before, I can understand why people are reluctant to step outside the usual indie/pop music for making fan stuff with.

Doesn't mean I don't still do it, I just keep it to myself now.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the fact that people use only few genres is okay, but if they have more than two songs by the same artist in one fanmix, I think it's weird. I mean, I get it if you love one band, but don't use every generic love song by that one band for your fanmix? At least spread it over two or three mixes.

I have several fandoms I would love to do fanmixes for, but I'm afraid to upload the music to some place. I could do it with audio/video links but seeing as I don't really listen to those fanmixes, I think it would be stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Also get tired of those. I can only listen to so many Snow Patrol songs.
There are still some awesome fanmix around - one in particular that comes to mind is a Life on Mars one that included extracts from the show and the most appropriate use of Queen's "I'm going sightly mad" ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I actually weep over the lack of metal fanmixes and if I ever get enough fitting songs for one together, I'm totally doing it! Go on and follow your heart!
P.S.: There was a Thor metal fanmix but it had alot of reoccuring artists and songs that weren't fitting and the song order was not very good? Well, just so you know....
