But there are so many of them :/

BSG, Lost, Prison Break, Heroes - those are just the ones I can think of off the tops of my where the first season stood head and shoulders above the rest in terms of quality.

Add to your list Downton Abbey, The Tudors, Rome (no fault of its own though), Ugly Betty...

I honestly can't think of a series (that I've seen in its entirety) where the first season WASN'T the best... at least in scripted shows. Surely that's not possible.

I'm tempted to say Teen Wolf's season 2 was better, but toward the end it got kind of... not great IMO, to the extent that I liked it less than the first few eps of season 1.

I think The Simpsons got better somewhere in the middle and has got worse again.

BREAKING BAD.

It only got better from the first season on.

+1

Sometimes it embarrasses me how much I love Breaking Bad.

Like, Family Guy has me and my sort pegged, hard.

Stargate improved after the first season, and I liked the second season of Alias a lot, though it might not be better in a more objective sense. Apparently the first season of Star Trek TNG was pretty cringe-worthy, but I haven't seen all of it. Seasons 2 and 3 of How I Met Your Mother were also better than the first. That's all I can think of immediately.

IMO, Supernatural got way better after season 1, though fans will debate loudly and frequently about which season was actually the best. (It was totally season 5, though.)

New Who, the Nine episodes were much better than what came afterwards.

That comparison makes me sad. Poor good kid who turned into a good for nothing adult. His star shone too brightly in the beginning and so faded too fast!

But yeah. I also feel like the show is a big ol' tease. All "look how awesome we are and the potential for more awesome!" but then the future seasons just fail.

I feel this way towards Firefly sometimes. Not about the first season being the best since it only had one, but wondering if the chance to have subsequent seasons would've made people eventually think this way. Since so many people regard it as "perfect."

I've seen lots of comments about Joss' future plans for the series suggesting that it would have gone this way, so it's probably best for the show that it died so tragically in its youth.

I think you also have to take into account that when people watch the first season of a show, they don't have nearly as much expectation as when they watch subsequent seasons. So it's harder for the subsequent seasons to live up to expectations.

Unless it's been massively hyped, then it's possible for a show to trip over its own feet and have a horrible first season and get canceled.

This secret reminds me that I've never watched the second season of Twin Peaks because it's notoriously awful. I'm not sure it's worth watching even though I adored the first season.

Oh it's good! I don't think Twin Peaks fits this at all, despite generally agreeing with this OP.

This secret actually makes me sad because I wonder if I'm an awful adult.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I'm sure you aren't! *hugs*
