I loved the movie. I loved Merida.

But I did find some of her actions not just "bratty", but "beyond the fucking pale and bordering on sociopathic." In particular after Elinor eats the cake and is in very obvious physical distress, Merida's only concern is whether she's changed her mind about the marriage. Not that the cake could've been fucking poisoned for all she knew and her mother may be dying right in front of her. She got it from a senile old witch, after all.

I dunno, when I was 14 and a teacher I hated was acting like she was poisoned, I would've done something a little more useful than grill her on whether she changed my grades yet.

I agree with all of this. That scene just made me angry at Merida, and not in a "oh, I hope she makes up for this" kind of way, but in a "wow, you're actually a horrible person" kind of way, which was really not Pixar's intent (I hope).

(Though I will admit, a lot of it is me projecting, as I've been in situations where both of my parents have gotten violently ill in front of me, and I would just be asking them if they had changed my mind about getting grounded or not! It's terrifying!)
