That's a totally valid way to read it, but I do understand why people felt otherwise. I don't think that calling Merida a brat automatically means assuming her parents should be able to control her sex life, as the OP suggested. That's my only point!

Oh I agree. And I think people who can't see that Merida actually did something very, very wrong that she had to atone for either missed or ignored a good half of the movie.
