Yes! Thank you! I'm in 100% agreement with you on this one. It gets a little wearying to see tropes and genres dismissed out of hand as "generally poorly written" or "almost always terrible." There's the same proportion of shit to awesome in mpreg as there is in amnesia fic as there is in kidfic as there is in future fic as there is in crossover fic and so on. Belonging to a certain genre does not mean that a fic is more likely to be terrible than any other.

Dude. There's a fic for one of my fandoms right now where the author killed off one of her OCs whom I'd spent a good 30 chapters getting attached to. I did not think I was capable of getting super-emotional over fiction, but that character's death had me bawling like a 5-year-old.

I've really enjoyed OCs in stories before, too, Anon. I think they can add a real depth to the story. Sometimes fic can be kinda claustrophobic when the only characters in it are the pairing and their canonical best friend or whatever. It's nice to remember that most people don't live in a vacuum.
