I talk in parentheses.

It can be an aside, a clarification, a side joke, or whatever.

It's set off by tone of voice, set of head (tilting it if the latter two, turning to face whoever I'm making the aside to for the former), and hand gestures.

Stewart Francis bases a lot of his act around that sort of thing.

YMMV. In my opinion, it's a written convention that doesn't translate to speech, and there are better ways to convey that in writing. Obviously, it's a style thing and not everyone will agree!

In dialogue, I would typically express that either via bracketing hyphens or a true break in the dialogue (e.g. "She's a moose," he began. He eyed Barbara and added, "but not a real moose," then turned back toward Fred. "That's why she snorted at you.").

I USED PARENTHESES FOR THIS. I feel weird.
