(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)while i'm sure jkr is a supporter of gay rights, it's very obvious she's not someone to look to for changing gay presence in literature. she didn't label dumbledore as gay because she wanted to be ~supportive~ or go "i'm an ally!!!". she did it because it was something about her character she wanted to talk about and wasn't thinking about the backlash, good or bad. it wasn't brought up in the books because it didn't seem important to her and there wasn't a point in bringing it up, since her intention wasn't to be an ally.
not every straight person is aware of their privilege and how their actions might effect things and arguing about it years after the fact doesn't make a single fucking difference. the only thing that matters now is that new people getting into the series do know he's gay, anyone claiming she should've inserted something about it is under the assumption that she's an ally, which she's not. she's just a straight woman who got a lucky break writing a series about stupid people pointing wands at each other and made one of her characters gay.
