Yeah, those things -- I can't believe I can't remember what they're called -- are great for self-defense, especially when you know how to use them, but it's worth note that in some states in the US it's considered a concealed weapon, which may or may not be considered illegal.

At least where we are, she's allowed to have it, but she can't take it on a plane. That's all I really know about it; I didn't know they were illegal in places (it strikes me as ridiculous to outlaw what amounts to a metal stick). But my point is, there are ways to protect yourself that are less likely to put you in more danger than a knife would. It sounds like a good idea in theory, but in real life, it's just going to end badly.
