Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
What are you looking for as far as refinement? If the diet is vet ordered I would assume it's okay as-is.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)Canned food is 'Chum" which is basically meats-of-your-choice with vitamins and jelling agents thrown in.
Dry food is 'Science Diet' for dogs with skin allergies, which is the main problem right now. But she's had random stomach flareups before so sometimes she gets the sensitive stomach one. As long as we have dry food in the diet, her stomach tends to roll okay and we can avoid deadly farts ;)
Basically I just can't go taking away dry food and throwing foods willy nilly at her. Gotta go carefully with new types/ingredients y'know? i.e. gave her fish as a treat once. She threw up EVERYWHERE. Never again.
The weekly bone is for her teeth and a bit of chewing entertainment, yeah :) I give it to her on the days I can't take her for walks.
Re: Pet owners who try to dictate you pet care
My vet put my dog on a hypoallergenic diet for two weeks and had us reintroduce key ingredients in the dry food she'd been eating, so we could find out what ingredient she was reacting to. Once chicken was singled out I was told to put her on a limited ingredient food (didn't matter if it was canned, dry, or a mix). She's on a dry food diet with lamb as the only source of protein and she's been fine ever since.
Mixing canned and dry food shouldn't be a problem but personally I would check to see if the protein sources match, so that you're not throwing TOO many ingredients into the mix. Also it takes some time for dogs to adjust to new food even if they have super-hardy stomachs. If watery stool is the only issue your dog has with the new diet she's probably still adjusting and it should go away eventually.
This website has a list of good hypoallergenic dog foods (both dry and canned) if you think a change of canned food will make your dog more receptive to it.
I hope your dog feels better soon! Allergies suck.
