Eh, personally I'm sick of people falling over and saying how ~amazing~ the writing was since...honestly? To me it came off as a lot of cliches getting mixed together in a way that's been done to death. [Unicorns are good! Dragons breath fire! Witches ride brooms! There's plenty more.]

That said, I don't hate her/the series for it, or judge her too much over the Dumbledor thing. It really wasn't important to the plot, and while there were a couple ways she might have been able to push it in there...it just wasn't important.

It's a children's book, though. It evolved into this great entity that is beloved by people of all ages, but it started out as a children's book. So of course it's not going to be written like Lord of the Rings (or your fantasy author of preference). The fact that she was able to take these "cliches" (which, I would argue that they're more myths, since a lot of the things mentioned in the books have been around for ages) and build a phenomenal world around them, making it sound natural and easy for even 9, 10, 11 year olds to understand is impressive, at least to me. I grew up with the books, so maybe I'm biased, but I certainly prefer her writing style to "Princess Arydnia in the city of Magiclandville is secretly a dorageon who uses magicks", or whatever (trying to cram as many names and concepts as they can into one paragraph to show off their brilliant fantasy world).
