it's a widespread thing for sure, but what confuses me is that it's so relatively recent. i'm aware of how the "women who have leg/armpit hair are slovenly" mindset arose in america, but women with unkempt pubes seems to have been more or less the norm long after that bit of brainwashing set in. i mean, go back and look at porn from the 70s. but now, you'd be hard pressed to find pubes anywhere in porn

what happened, and why? a thoughtful pube study

Hey there! Let me be your resident sex freak/geek for the night. Pubic hair was "in" during the 70s and earlier because of laws that prohibited lady bits being show explicitly in porn mags that could also be sold in stores not explicitly just for porn. The bush was a hiding mechanism.

Laws were changed, and things changed slowly. Who the fuck wanted to see someone completely shaved, anyway? That's some weird shit kinky right there...

But then people realized they could now look at actual vulvas legally and the razors were brought the fuck out. Get these men a proper view of where they were(n't) going to hide their penis! Purely a sex thing.

As always, porn influenced RL expectation and now having a bush? That's some weird kinky shit right there...

(Also unhygenic. God this stereotype pisses me off, both on a scientific and personal level. The purpose of body hair is to KEEP YOU CLEAN. The implication that a natural part of your body is inherently gross and less clean that the body-mutilating alternative is super body and sex negative and just gross. I guess it kind of makes sense. A person who doesn't give a shit about their hygeine probably wouldn't bother w/ shaving but still, the idea that body hair is inherently less clean makes me laugh forever)

...tune in next time, when we discuss the ethics of sex work~!

ok, things are starting to make sense now. thank you, anonymous! i have officially learned something useful tonight.

going to have to agree with you 100% on that "pubes are unhygenic" bit.

Also just adding to anon comment above (also geeky about this subject) what happened was that porn directors realising they could get a much better shot if the woman was totally hair free. So hence porn films started featuring hairless women, and then the internet happened so young kids were watching porn in a way that just simply didn't happen in the 70s.

So in the 70s porn was consumed by people who had already been having sex, and pubic hair was just a normal thing, now it's watched by 13 year olds, at school on their phones, and so some girls learn early about the hairless thing, and start removing it as soon as they start getting it, and some boys pressure the girls to behave like porn stars, having no idea that porn actresses are just doing a job, there's lots of takes, they don't really do what you see them do as they will have been having a break and a cup of tea half way through, and oh yeah, they are given drugs to relax their muscles to be able to do some of the scenes.

I have Old Codger moments whenever I look at porn now because dang, it's just so weird-looking compared to when I was a curious, puberty-adjacent wee mite.

No pubes, of course, but also very little in the way of inner labia on the women and practically no colour variation--everyone's bleaching their bits, front and back.

I saw a porn clip once where it looked like the guy was pounding into the end of a pillow that inexplicably had legs instead of corners. The woman's body was white and featureless, right down to the hole.

Can't say as I find it sexy, damned kids, get off my lawn.

THANK YOU FOR THIS I am so so fucking sick of hearing how "gross" pubic hair is, like people who have it never bathe or something

I mean, whether or not you want to shave is your choice but I feel like by making the decision to not shave I get a LOT MORE SHIT than people who do shave and that is ridiculous. So I'll stop with the "you look like a pre-pubescent" comments when people stop calling me dirty and gross for not shaving (and if I did shave I would have to do it twice a day, otherwise it'd be uncomfortable as hell down there, stubble on your fucking vulva is annoying as shit)

I have a jungle and at best I can keep it down to somewhat more trimmed jungle. Otherwise I'd have to shave on the regular (b/c I'm a hairy lady and the hair continues down my legs a bit) and hello razor burn forever. My sensetive skin is never going to be okay w/ shaving, so trust me when I say I feel your pain.

The purpose of pubic hair is to catch dirt and keep it out of your genitals. Its purpose is to collect dirt. Saying its purpose is to keep you clean and just implying that having pubic hair will automatically make you more hygienic is only half the story...you have to actually clean it yourself. Granted, a lot of the dirt that the hair would ordinarily catch is stopped by underwear, but it's still ridiculous to assume people with hair are cleaner than those without.

And "body-mutilating"? Cutting off a non-living substance that will grow back counts as mutilation, now?
