That seems rather silly, why not use dashes? People are defending this stuff because they feel very strongly about the fact that they do express themsleves irl that way, but uh... it's just a bad stylistic choice. There's proper thingies for that stuff - and I'm sure most of you have seen them used too - so why go with something that's obviously not sending a clear message for everyone?
