Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] inkmage 2013-01-27 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I've no idea on the difficulty, but I love being stealthy in video games and it'd be cool to play one that's focused on that, as opposed to Skyrim where it's just another way to play the game. (There is some kind of problem where the first Thief game has trouble running on Windows 7, but apparently it's well-loved enough that people have figured out the solutions, and it shouldn't be too hard to implement.)

The verdict here, in response to the question, "Should I get Assassin's Creed or the Thief games?" appears to be, "Yes."

Given the givens, I'll probably let my brother decide. It isn't as though either game is going to vanish suddenly.

Very true. You can always get Assassin's later if you're still interested.

Since you say you like being stealthy in video games, I should mention Dishonored. I know dethtoll and others have already said how awesome it is, but I've got to reaffirm that. It's brilliant. I know it'll be a while before it goes on sale, but it's definitely worth a try when it does.

Yeah, it's Thief that's on sale so I'll probably get that.

I know, I keep sighing longingly over Dishonored, but I can't really get it right now for several reasons: one, I flat out can't afford it, two, my parents probably wouldn't like it, and three, our computer's graphics card is kind of out-of-date, so I dunno how well it would run without looking really... bleh.

I understand. Even if you don't play it for a few years (or so), that's better than never playing it. (And honestly, who hasn't played a game 'late' at some point?)

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

Lol, I think almost all of the games I've played are "late." Except for Skyrim... I dunno if that counts. When exactly is the cutoff for a "late" game?

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-27 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there is a cutoff point, and if there is you should ignore it. Play when you want, it's never too late!

The only things I think are unfortunate about playing a game 'late' is that some people will have moved on by then, so sometimes it might be harder to find people to talk about it with. Also, there's a pretty good chance you'll be spoiled by the time you play it. Can't help that, though.

What I do like about playing games after they've been out for a while is that there are already plenty of walkthroughs and usually there's a fully detailed wiki by then, so if you need any help you're in luck.

Yes, yes, and yes. I have to leave the computer soon, so I'm gonna leave it at that, sorry.

Funnily enough, Dishonored was majorly influenced by Thief, so much so that they included an easter egg where you overhear two people having the exact same conversation that you start The Dark Project with.

I was the OP of that secret, by the way, so obviously I recommend Thief.

Oh man, I got Dishonored right before Christmas on Steam for %50 off, because I vaguely remembered dethtoll talking about it, and OH MY GOD IT IS AMAZING. I don't even have words.

Yea! I expected it to be good, but did not expect to enjoy it to the extent that I did. It's seriously one of the better games I've ever played.

Did you finish it?

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-01-27 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh yes, I finished it twice, first with high chaos and then with low chaos. I'm probably going to try a ghost run soon.

Ooh, you've been busy! Which ending did you like best? I've only finished it once and got the best ending you can get whilst still killing people. I did watch the others on youtube though and actually thought the high chaos endings were fantastic as well. The dialogue is chilling.

Good luck on your ghost run! I could never, I'm not good enough. lol.

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-01-27 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I always prefer the bad endings, no matter what game I'm playing, lol. There's something about playing as a complete monster that I love; probably the thrill of being something that I could never ever be in real life.

basically if a game has a moral choice system, I play as an asshole.

Ah, alright, that makes sense. Everyone enjoys a little escapism now and then.

There's only a couple games where I feel comfortable doing that (one being Fable, and that's mostly because there are so few characters with actual personalities). I usually wimp out and be nice to everyone instead, so I kind of envy you.

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-01-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The only games where I have consistently chosen "good" choices over bad are the Mass Effect series, and that's only because certain characters are just so lovable that I can't be mean to them (Tali, especially. That little Russian alien babe....I will give her all the hugs!). I'm still a complete asshole the rest of the time in-game, though.

Interestingly, Fable II is one of the only games that had a moment that made me think "wow, this is making me a worse person" and it was the part where you had to not feed the prisoners. My mom walked in while I was playing through that part and for real sat down and had a *talk* with me. >.>

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-28 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha. Your mom is kind of adorable tbh. I admit there are moments in the Fable games where being an asshole makes you really truly evil and terrible, but I can justify it to myself easier because you don't have teammates to grow attached to or influence.

IDK if you played Fable III but there were some pretty awful moments in that one too, though I never finished my evil playthrough. (Hell, the very beginning was rough.)

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-01-28 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Fable III is actually my favorite of all of them, if only because of the absolute ridiculous beauty of it, especially the parts in the desert with the darkness. That game has the only moment in the entire Fable series where I just. cannot. make the evil choice, and that is leaving Walter behind in the desert. I always cry over his entire character arc, tbh. (The beginning...are you referring to having to choose between the villagers or your love interest? Because I always just let the villagers die...)

Yeah, my mom is pretty awesome, and she usually just rolls her eyes while I kill villagers and cackle maniacally, but idk, sitting there ignoring people who are begging for food is kind of worse, in a way? I don't really have the words to articulate it, but the second situation is more....insidious, I guess. So she sat me down and Talked about video games and whether they Influence me, and when she was satisfied she got up and let me get back to starving prisoners to death.

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-01-28 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I like them all but have a soft spot for Fable III because of Walter, too. And while I can understand picking evil choices in video games, leaving Walter behind just seems unnecessarily cruel and heartless. I couldn't do it either. His death is probably the only time I've ever cried during a Fable game. (Yep! Haha, I just feel awful being all, "YOU PEASANTS ARE GONNA DIE FOR MY LOVE INTEREST!" I let them live my second time, which funnily enough was my evil playthrough.)

Aww, aha. It's nice that she takes such an interest in your well being! And I agree about the starving...that was one section I'll never forget. On one hand: EXPERIENCE! On the other...having to listen to people beg for food for a good three minutes.

Re: Thief or Assassin's Creed?

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-01-28 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
The interesting thing about the beginning is that the villager/love interest choice actually does not affect your alignment at all one way or the other. It's just supposed to be an intro to the moral choice system.

Also: WALTERRRRRR *SOB*

Yeah, me and my mom generally love the same movies, books, and tv like 90% of the time, but she doesn't do non-casual video games, so she gets surprised sometimes by the extremes that some games go to in order to make an impact. Personally, I feel that that was probably one of the greatest sequences in the game, if only because it's stuck with me for YEARS afterwards, and I still feel bad about it, even though no actual human people were hurt in any way at all.
