I think it helped that every chapter I've been keeping focus on the canon characters.

Exactly, yes.

I've never seemed to have a lot of trouble with the ego thing myself, but I think that might be because my ego is wrapped up in the storytelling rather than in the OC, if that makes any sense. I'll sacrifice or rein in the OC if they get intrusive, because I'm too proud to let them kill my story.

That makes sense.

I am very proud of my OCs and I admittedly do have some attachment to them, and that makes me want to do what it takes to make them seem likeable and not annoy people. I don't want people to dislike them and I understand that shoving them in their faces will make people dislike them no matter how many cool little accessories and things I add to them. So I pull back when I need to. I know that I have a bias and they may not be as interesting to me as they are to others. I have to write well and earn it.
