I remember thinking the ending was a bit weird when I first got to it. I guess it just wasn't what I was expecting but after two days of being totally engrossed in it I got to last page and was just like "...h u h..." Though I love it, I like We Have Always Lived in the Castle more. But I think I'm in the minority.

The queer subtext is fantastic, and there's quite a few Yuletide fics that explore that dynamic on AO3 if you wanna check them out.
I like the ending, partly because it reminds me of Ethan Frome and partly because I see it as another example of Eleanor trying to turn her fantasy narratives into reality.
I have not read anything else by her besides "The Lottery." I should probably remedy that.
