And the other thing is the fact that it's "cool" to act like those Suethors committed some horrible crime. Is it really necessary to scream at a twelve year old girl for writing a bad fanfic? And even if they're not twelve, that's still kind of nasty. I realize it's easy to take out your frustrations online, even I've done it (and I'm not proud of it), but... that doesn't make it okay.

YES YES YES

This so much. I mean my God, it is a bad story. That's it. A not that great story written by (usually) a novice. It doesn't warrant a temper tantrum. It doesn't warrant you to tell them to go to hell because they paired your favorite character with an OC and you HAAAATE OCs. Yes I realize that if you put something up you're opening it to criticism but that doesn't mean be as nasty as humanely possible , it's their fault for putting it up. That is the same line of reasoning behind "she's wearing a short skirt, she's asking for it". You're not "preparing a kid for real life" by shouting insults and curses at them, you're just being an asshole. I once saw someone claim that "writing a Suefic is the literary equivilant of soiling yourself in public"

No. It's the literary equuvilant of falling off a fucking bike.

If we make writing mistakes socially unacceptable, we are in effect making the act of making a mistake unacceptable. If everyone is afraid to write something bad because it's "socially unacceptable" in the writing community then nothing good will ever be written. You cannot succeed if you are afraid of failure. Don't give people a reason to be afraid of failing at something new.

Some would argue that if they're putting their "obviously bad suefic" online than they deserve it . This argument is stupid if we're talking about beginners. Not everyone knows what people who have been at it for years now. A seasoned fanfiction writer who's seen it all may see obviously bad, but a novice only sees "I wrote a story about a cool character doing cool things." They don't know very much about character development and everything that goes into a piece of fiction. If they have been at this for five years and have been told repeatedly what they're doing wrong and constantly just rebuff even the fairest critics I can understand being blunt.(and you could also just...idk ignore them)

But expecting a child or a young teen who's posting their first story to just magically know how to write? No , it's unneeded it's cruel and it's being an asshole. it's also giving the new writer a poor expectation for criticism. If she gets a bunch of rude cuss outs, and her first experiences with criticizing are "do what I say or get off the internet" or "your character is shit", she is going to view a most other corrections as attacks as well. I don't know why this statement isn't a "no shit, sherlock" it's obvious. We don't need more writers who are super defensive. Being nice when giving criticism to beginners isn't sugar coating, it's helping them establish a healthy appreciation for and understanding of what constructive criticism is and isn't
