(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)A few things. One I am not that into shipping. My reasons for including an OC are not "lol cause I wanna have sex with him" I don't even write sex scenes because they are hideously uncomfortable for me and hell if I want my sex fantasy on the internet. People have other reasons for writing an original character.
Why don't you read the other comments if you want to see them. Might expand your perspective.
Super special female character
...seriously. You're way off. A majority of my characters including one that I've actually shipped with a canon have been male and the character I was shipping them with was a character that I could see interesting relationship dynamics with. I'm far more interested in personalities (ones that are already there) than sex. Relationship dynamics, ups, downs what they argue about , what they bond over blah blah that kind of thing.
For example in one story I ship Sam from Danny Phantom with an OC because one, her love interest is shipped with another female canon character, two because the OC is someone who has a handful of things in common with her and they compliment each others personalities. She has a forceful sometimes overbearing personality. He is pretty passive and rarely raises his voice to a girl but as someone whose practiced in debate he can show her another perspective and pull her back. She pushes, he pulls.
In the show I felt she was too often portrayed as being "so right" even when she was being pushy or hypocritical or even incompatible with previous development, because the writers needed someone to be the voice of reason even when it didn't fit, even if it was contradictory, (season one: stealing frogs from the science lab and whipping up a mob of fellow vegans when her best friend and other students get tired of the all vegetarian diet she convinced the cafeteria to take on. Season two: tries to convince her friend with superpowers to scare people away from buying big SUVs, when in a previous episode she told him not to abuse his powers. Season three : plant monster violently takes over the town in revenge for abusing his children? "try something peaceful like a petition" Uhuh....riiiiiiiiiight, just like you would do, Sam). I don't mind the end pairing and even use it in other stories when it fits, but the way they developed Danny and Sam's romance never sat right with me. Danny x Valerie (the pairing I use in the fic I'm talking about) was much less in your face and forced and much more interesting.
The only story where I actually planned to pair a character with a female Fan Character (a guy with similar interests who had been looking for a girlfriend) it was really no more than an implied romance a kiss, a moment here and there. More focus went on the actual plot. I really don't find romance as a central plot to be interesting at all . So ,why would I write it, other than the fact that it fits your convienent little stereotype of me?
In short I am probably one of the LEAST shipping-invested fanfic writer you'll run into. I care about the characters. Not their sexytimes. Which means I care about writing them correctly.
Assuming someone's character is them. Yeah, no. I'm sure that flies with a person who shows that they're the type who doesn't think about their plot characterization and concept beyond writing a shrine to their OC,but anybody who writes Originals as a whole? No. The OCs I use are usually OCs I've created with the intent of later using in original works, because writing is quite obsessively my thing. Why would I write a whole story full of self inserts. Why would I write a self insert at all really? What point is there to put all my traits into one character, when I can sprinkle them amongst all the characters so they have something in them I can identify with and yet have them all have other traits that make them their own person?
I'm not a thirteen year old writing fantasies. I know what I'm doing. I've been at this for almost ten years.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)I'm sorry, but (even though I think the other anon was pretty rude teal dearing you) I kind of agree with the other anon. You seem to feel very strongly about creating good OCs and obviously love your OCs a lot. So... why do you shove them in fanfics where most people will just be annoyed by them? Why not make up completely original stories with canons that are made just for your characters?
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)The problem with bad OC fics (and there are a hell of a lot of them) is that the writer doesn't learn about the canon characters as much as they ought to. They just want to make their fantasy real. Which is what The Sims is for. You want to be serious you do research. You watch the show , and watch them a lot.
I write original fic. I also write fanfiction. Why? Because it's fun that why. I put a bunch of work into something and I'm proud of it. I go to work I do school, and I write. I don't know why I can't do both.
OCs won't annoy people if you put work into it. Also warn people in the summary. If they don't like it they don't read it *shrug* Doesn't bother me if I lose a reader or two it's not their thing. I write for the love of it. My annoyance with that anon was their assumptions about me and the fact they didn't bother to read anything said before.
If the story annoys you don't read it. Why should I just not write something because it annoys a few people?
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)Shit it's always the little things.
Also note that I was annoyed with the original anon because he/she was rude. Several other people have come in saying they don't like or don't care for OC fics. But they were polite. They merely stated their reasons for enjoying it while the other anon just acted passive aggressivley snide.
