I beat the GameBoy version easily, but I literally got stuck on the Super Nintendo version for 16 years.

I could never get past a certain level and I finally had to give up when the Super Nintendo finally died.

I'm still mad about that (and confused as how I was able to beat the level I couldn't get past in the Super Nintendo version in the GameBoy version).

It's a Super Mario game, OP. I don't think anyone has beaten old Mario games without having to sell their souls first. Don't beat yourself for it.

i hardly think it's worthwhile to judge your status as a gamer if you haven't beaten a certain game, no matter how popular it is
if you play games and you love the games you play, how are you not a gamer?

i have never beaten a single mario game, but i can beat the original half life in just over 2 hours. if the first qualifies me as "not a gamer," then the second part of that statement sure is an enigma, isn't it?

Pretty sure I've yet to beat any game I've played, ever. And much of my time is spent playing games (yay for short attention spans). I dare someone to call me not a gamer.

If you start thinking you have to do certain things to 'qualify' as a gamer you will never be a gamer. Beat Super Mario World? Real gamers speed run the original NES Super Mario! If you do that? Real gamers play PC games on a PC that they build themselves! Do that? Real gamers not only have an Atari 2600 *and* a Colecovision, they build their own vintage-style arcade cabinets to play Pac-Man!

You will never win the 'real' gamer contest because someone will always find you lacking. Real gamers are people who love games, period. How you enjoy them doesn't matter.

I often feel this way when I consider all the complex cinematic games I have completed, with all the difficult strategy, photo-realistic characters, real-world physics, advanced weapons selections and super-hard-to-kill bosses. I have done all that, and yet my princess is forever in another castle. I never saved her. I gave up. A pixelated dragon ate her, to the ruin of all the Mushroom Kingdom, because a slow-moving angry mushroom touched me.

Peach just gets to hang out with Bowser a little longer then. I imagine them sipping dry martinis and bitching about their respective minions.

About being a "real gamer," I had to use two separate walkthroughs to beat Flower, if that makes you feel better.

I love video games. I've played countless titles.

Yet I can count on one hand the number that I've actually beaten.

I just don't give enough of a shit. And, honestly? You shouldn't, either. It's but entertainment, after all, and any claims to superiority or objectivity are a sign of insecurity and/or misplaced arrogance.

Alright, I'll bite, although I think you're either an intentional troll or desperately in need of attention.

Why does not finishing that game make you think you're not a gamer.

Super Mario World!!! My family got a SNES when I was 5, with this game, and we didn't have many games so this randomly happens to be a game I'm awesome at. But other old games... well, I swear they used to make them a lot harder. Maybe like, it used to rely a lot more on your timing and reaction time, rather than more complex strategy/puzzle/whatever.

I recently beat Donkey Kong Country (dug out the old SNES) and after um, nearly twenty years (oh god oh god) I was pretty damn proud.

I consider myself a gamer. Most people I know would consider me a pretty hardcore gamer.

But you know what, OP? The only Nintendo system I've ever owned was a SNES. And the only Mario and Zelda games I've ever played were the originals on the NES at my grandma's house. I've never played a newer Mario or Zelda game. Never played Pokemon. Never beaten any of them. Have no interest in either series or any Nintendo console/handheld.

And yet, I'm still a gamer. Because being a gamer isn't about what you play or what you beat, its about how much you play and how much a priority games are in your life. It's just like saying you're an artist, or a writer, or a baker, or dancer, anything else.

I feel super old that the picture is of the Gameboy version and not the SNES one.

I never describe myself as a gamer because as soon as I do, some shitty frat type puts a gamepad in my hand and is like "prove it". And I can't work the damn thing at all, because while I have literally thousands of gaming hours to my name, it's PC only. But of course then everyone's like "nice try fake geek girl". RAGE

So what if you aren't? Why do you need the label?
