Well, aren't you special.

I've been shipping it since LONG before the movies came out. In fact, after reading Lord of the Rings the first time, I asked my mom why Gimli and Legolas didn't get married (I was 10, at the time).

You mean before the movies? Yeah, I did. And I'm far from the only one. The fandom has been around longer than the movies and people shipped things based on their mental image. But if that makes me an evil hipster, so fucking be it.

No, of course not. Just pointing out that the fandom didn't magically spring up out of the rock with the movies and a lot of people don't just ship things because of the actors involved.

I think most people apply the movie characters' looks to the book characters. I'm not defending OP, but that could be why they're still unable to ship them.

That could be and I'm not saying that's bad. My point is that the ship predates the movies and there is always carry over in those cases. That, and dismissing the pre-movie fans and their take on it is just as douchey as saying the movie fans are doing it wrong.

Basically, shipping isn't just about pretty boys bumping yummy bit for everyone. *shrugs*
