Oh, come off it, Donna wasn't that original — Lucie Miller from the Eighth Doctor's Big Finish Audios came first. Sure, she wasn't a redhead, but she was a lot more like Donna than Amy was like Donna, and Lucie came first.

Donna was great, and Catherine Tate did a fantastic job with the role, but Donna's archetype wasn't that original and Amy was a completely different character. Like her or not (I'm pretty ambivalent on her, if I'm completely honest), but they weren't the same and I didn't read Amy as having been created to be the same. I'm also going to agree with the anon above me about how ... pointless your rant about Amy comes across as. Seriously, what was the point? There's no fun in focussing in whatever it is that drives you up the wall about another (unrelated) character and another writer. Celebrate Donna as a character, man! Fuck knows she didn't get the ending she deserved.

This comment is WONDERFUL.

Also, complete originality in Doctor Who is not only nearly impossible, given just how much material it has covered, IMO it's not really that desirable. There are tried and true character traits that just work - for companions, for Doctor incarnations, for supporting characters, for villains - and cropping up again and again is part of what gives a meaningful pattern and some sense of continuity and familiarity to a show where the entire cast is reshuffled every two or three years.

Yes, exactly! Particularly in the case of companions, I'd say — I mean, I'd probably say that the extended canon has more scope to mess with the core traits of what makes a 'good' companion, although I'd say that in some respects, Rory had similarities to Fitz, and I suspect this is why I adored Rory; and then there were characters like Compassion (which, again, is why I imagine that I liked but didn't love Gaiman's episode). But there are definitely traits that the audience — from fans and casual viewers and everyone in between — like to see reflected in a companion, and that work both believably in terms of 'this type of person would agree to go travelling with the Doctor' and in terms of storytelling. If Rose was as truly, horrifically clingy as fandom likes to portray her as (for example. I admit I'm no fan of Rose as a companion, but she wasn't, I think, as bad as some corners of fandom like to think), then she wouldn't have been a believable companion. The Doctor chooses his companions based on how they react to the world and the universe around them — and, of course, him — so there are going to be similarities between them.

BUT THEN AGAIN I think I'm just preaching to the choir here.

...DW fandom: not happy with change, not happy with a lack of change. I guess this is where I insert the obligatory #veritylambertkilleddoctorwho comment.

#veritylambertkilleddoctorwho

*snort* I really, really, really can't wrap my mind around people who throw shitfits about changes in Doctor Who. The show is literally ALL about change.

And yes I agree, companions are not actually a representative sample of Earth's population. Or even Britain's population. Not everyone makes a good counterpoint to the Doctor. Actually, this is why I tend to really enjoy having more than one companion in the TARDIS: it gives more room for character flexibility, so the two or more characters can pool their different strengths together to serve as a foil for the Doctor rather than having it all on one companions shoulders. I mean, I love duos as well (Ten/Donna and Seven/Ace being my favorites), but, for example, I preferred Nine/Rose/Jack to just Nine/Rose or just Ten/Rose.

You also reminded me that I need to listen to more audios. All the ones with Eight I've gotten my hands on were with Charley.

Oh, man, are you me? Multiple companions in the TARDIS is what I live for. I was unbelievably excited when I realised that Eleven + Amy + Rory was going to be a thing — and I agree with you wrt character flexibility, which is another bonus of having multiple companions at the same time. Anji/Fitz/Eight remains my favourite Team TARDIS, I'm not going to lie.

As far as the audios go, I'm not actually a huge lover of Charley, although I can understand why people enjoyed her as a companion (and the Zagreus arc was pretty fun). Lucie, on the other hand, I thought was fab. I haven't listened to any of the audios in a couple of years though — the last one I listened to was Lucie's 'departure', and that was a few years back. I was always more of a fan of the EDAs, but the audios obviously have the added bonus of Paul Mcgann's voice, which I don't think anyone in their right mind can deny is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

Haha YES I just love seeing more than one person around the Doctor. It's not that they're intrinsically better than single companions, but they have a vibe that I LOVE -- the vibe of the Doctor taking his friends/students/adopted family members around on glorious adventures and kind of being their mentor/tour guide/crazy leader friend who always convinces everyone to get into trouble -- which has a tendency to come out a lot more strongly when there's more than one companion.

Thanks for the recs! Always looking for more Who. I used to gobble up the Classic series like mad after I had finished off New Who, but now that I've watched considerably more than half of all Classic serials, I'm irrationally afraid of the idea of "running out" of things I haven't seen.

huff yes, precisely!

You're welcome! I mostly stuck to Eight's audios, although I hear that the vast majority of them are pretty fantastic (particularly Six's, I believe, and ... also Seven's?). I've also heard that BFA's Gallifrey series is absolutely magnificent, and I keep meaning to get around to listening to it myself.

(Because all Doctor Who needs more Gallifrey, okay.)

+1. Why do fans have to bash and hate so much. Just. Leave me alone to love Donna, and stop shoving Rose/Martha/whoever down my throat I JUST WANT TO LOVE DONNA.
