Why do I keep forgetting that fandom ships characters for their looks and not because they are just really close and sweet together etc? :/

Did you somehow miss the popularity of ships like Clint/Coulson or Sherlock/Watson, where nobody involved will be winning any beauty pageants any time soon?

But shipping is a hobby and a fantasy and people prefer to fantasize about characters that are at least marginally attractive to them.

Gimli is really fucking pushing the tolerably ugly line.

But I'd say most of the Clint/Coulson and Sherlock/Watson shippers do find the characters/actors attractive. God forbid you say you find Cumberbatch unattractive in the hearing of one of his fans. I'm not saying they're all shipping them for the hot, but their hotness is gushed over, whether or not we agree with it. Everyone finds different things attractive. There are people who find Steve Buscemi attractive, so I'm not gonna be surprised by someone getting off on Clark Gregg.

but their hotness is gushed over

Because of the characters they play.

Nobody was gushing over Cumberbatch's hotness when he played a rapist in Atonement.Clark Gregg wasn't that popular when he was in the West Wing, either.

The characters they play make them more attractive. But there's a limit, usually related to grotesqueness. Characters like Gollum are too grotesque to be perved on (BY MOST PEOPLE) and while Gimli is not at that level, he IS fucking pushing the tolerably ugly line for the average person, yeah.

Because of the characters they play.

To some extent and for some people, yes. But they're playing higher profile characters, so they've become higher profile actors, so more people are aware of them as people to gush over. My mother's never seen Cumberbatch in anything, but she's aware of him in a way she wasn't a few years ago because he's a lot more visible as a celebrity now. She also thinks he's attractive, without having seen him in anything. I have a friend who has only seen him in Atonement, thinks he was horribly creepy in it, and still finds the actor attractive. So I don't think attraction to someone is always based on equating them with their characters. Sometimes someone's ugly just equals another person's hot.

Woah, wait now, Jeremy Renner is a sex god.

SA

And I have had this opinion since he played a one-shot vampire on Angel, btw.

Isn't this every fandom, though?
