I think this is the result of fandom becoming bigger, easier to join, and younger.

ff.net wouldn't exist without 11 year olds pretending to be 13, but in pre-LJ fandom, the tone was set by older people, some of whom had moved from zines to usenet to mailing lists. Now the conversation is dominated by teenagers on tumblr, which is fine, they're having fun, but it's not for me.
