I feel like fandom in general is less good at self-awareness and compartmentalising than it used to be.

There used to be a sharp divide between 'doing fandom' and more mundane interaction with the source material. There's always been some fen with no sense of boundaries, but I remember when the unwritten rule was that you didn't talk to the actors or TPTB about fandom stuff.

Now - especially with actors on Twitter, I think - people seem to forget that just because actors are occasionally aware of parts of fandom, they are not in fandom. They do not get what you are talking about. They do not read the meta. They don't understand all the things you think are at stake in the canon. Hell, they may not even like the show they're in that much even if they do their job well acting in it.

I don't know if that's got anything to do with the OP's secret, but I agree with hir point that fandom looks vastly different from the outside looking in and it's foolish not to take that into account.

This is how I read the secret too and I've been having the same feelings lately. It's not that fandom discussion isn't valuable, but I feel like some perspective has been lost. Even though TPTB are starting to see the value in engaging the fanbase (though not without plenty of missteps, like when the Teen Wolf tumblr told people to 'calm down') we're far from the majority audience! I have friends who don't understand reddit, comprehending a community based around sexual tension on some terrible genre show is going to be totally beyond a lot of people who nonetheless are the target audience for the show.

I've been browsing SPN fandom lately and I've never see the show but I know a couple guys who have. It's interesting to see how their totally casual view of the show contrasts with the overwhelmingly female fandom hivemind.

I just got caught by your username. Grainne Mhaol as in Grainne Ni Mhaille, the pirate queen?

*grins* Well, if you're going to reference a historical figure, there's worse than Grainne. And possibly that's not the version of the nickname people are used to? It's usually anglicised as 'Granuaile', after all.

You're probably right. I've never really worked out how one is meant to pronounce 'Granuaile' tbh.

Re: Off Topic

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how it's meant to be pronounced, but I've always said it as grawn-you-ale? Grainne Mhaol is more grawnya vaol, yes?

"Grawnya Wale" - so I guess the Anglicisation actually works pretty well!

Also happy to hear this - I wondered too. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it feels like fandom has lost perspective. Especially regarding it's own importance. Yes, there are shows that let themselves be influenced by what the fans want (but not as much as they like to believe imo) but not every show does that and especially not those with small or moderate sized fandoms.
Idk the argument "They would never do that, because they fans would be angry!" just annoys me. You are not that powerful, because there are millions of other people not in fandom who watch this show without hardcore shipping your ship.

Considering there was just a Tweet from Dylan O'Brien (Stiles on Teen Wolf) telling people to stop Tweeting things to him about Tyler Hoechlin (Derek) or Sterek to him, ONE THOUSAND TIMES THIS. I never thought I could be more uncomfortable than when I was looped into a conversation with a Supernatural actor in which another fan was trying to tell him about Wincest and J2, but tonight just takes the cake. I seriously want to ditch the TW Tumblr tab, but then I'd miss some of the good things about fandom.

Dear various fandoms: THE ACTORS ARE NOT IN FANDOM. THEY CLEARLY FIND YOUR BEHAVIOR UNNERVING AND OBNOXIOUS, IF NOT OUTRIGHT CREEPY. PLEASE STOP.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
OH SHIT this happened? People were tweeting him about rps!? The fuck is wrong with people. I used to enjoy some teen Wolf fic, but now I know what people mean when they say fans ruin the ship for them.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - I think I'm going to stop following the fandom. I'll probably still read fic, but no more following spoilers or cast news or production info. It just makes me so insanely uncomfortable and ASHAMED and GUILTY for participating in this - what is WRONG with people that they think this is okay? Or that the actors or producers or show OWE them anything?

UGH, I'm just having a lot of insanely uncomfortable and and upset feels. And this is coming from a former Supernatural/J2 fan.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Did you actually see the tweet? tumblr is saying it's fake. It would really ease my mind if it was, because so far I've been able to imagine that the creepy-ass fans are at least contained within the fandom.
I feel like the Supernatural cast got it a bit easier starting before tumblr/twitter made fandom so public.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I didn't see the tweet myself, but I wasn't able to find anything refuting it. Granted, didn't try incredibly hard (can't quite seem to find the tag to get the info about it), but I really, really don't find it that hard a jump to make.

And while the SPN actors might have had it a bit easier due to their lack of participation in social media, but I think the outrageous crazy of the fans might have outstripped it. Jensen Ackles got jumped at a con, and the ships that fans were suggesting were infinitely more messed up/socially unacceptable than those of the TW fandom. I think the majority of SPN fans weren't quite as deluded as much of the TW fandom, but the tiny percentage that was happened to be BUCKETS OF CRAZY.

I follow him on Twitter and just tried to find that Tweet. Unless he has since deleted it I don't think it was real.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are mistaking it for that deleted tweet in which he said that he reads sterek fic while humping a wolf dildo (with a knot, they actually sell those, but looking at your icon, you probably know that :9)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
No, there was definitely a screencap of a tweet that said something to the effect of "Stop sending me stuff about Hoechlin and Sterek. I will take a shit on your lawn" on what looked like O'Brien's Twitter. Now, I don't follow him and according to the anon above, they can't find that post, but I'm inclined to think he posted it, thought better of freaking out, and deleted it. Doesn't mean they aren't secretly freaked out, what with fans sending Sterek cookies to the cast...

Shit like that makes me embarrassed to be in TW fandom. I wish these delusional fans would realize the actors have separate lives, are not their characters and don't ship themselves with each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a gifset for SPN on Tumblr that had a fan asking Jensen Ackles (Dean) what he would do for a Klondike Bar. Innocent at first and when he turned the question back to the fan, she replied "You.". I don't think I've ever been so offended for someone else in my life. The man is married and expecting his first kid, for chrissakes. His character would have been fine with such a thing, but not the man himself. There's also a lot of "We're not our characters" statements from the actors, something I feel some people don't seem to get. I feel like actors today should get awards for even bothering with their fanbases.

I think this is the result of fandom becoming bigger, easier to join, and younger.

ff.net wouldn't exist without 11 year olds pretending to be 13, but in pre-LJ fandom, the tone was set by older people, some of whom had moved from zines to usenet to mailing lists. Now the conversation is dominated by teenagers on tumblr, which is fine, they're having fun, but it's not for me.
