Okay then, explain to me--and I do mean this without sarcasm--how you have a fannish discussion on tumblr. Like, to keep it to something we know, once a big discussion starts in the comments on Fandom Secrets, you can jump in anywhere on the thread, reply to any person on the thread, and everyone can see your replies--can see ALL the replies at the same time, see if someone said what they were about to say, respond to that, and it's all right there.

Is there a way to do that on tumblr?

Because I love it, but as far as I can see, the only way to have a conversation is reblog reblog reblog, and responses and replies get lost in the aether, or piled on top of each other, and the like, especially if you have more than two or three people trying to be involved. On LJ it's pretty easy to jump in, no matter how many people are talking. On tumblr...I dunno, I'll just give 'em a reaction image of Troy crying or something.

Re. Blog. Ing. Or fan mail if you want to talk to a very specific person.

Yes, it gets cluttered (wish you could scrunch them up or something) but, you CAN have a nice discussion going with that. Plus, with the names attached that way and all, it's not hard to keep up with. And you can go to your POSTS tag that's in the right corner of the thing (or it is with missing e) that has everything you posted and see who all commented on what thing you posted and you can easily keep going with that.

It's not ideal and some discussions get disjointed, but it can be done.

Yes, LJ and DW are easier, but with most of the fannish activity over there now, you can find ways around it. It's not that difficult if you give it the proper amount of effort.

So much for "without sarcasm." "Re. Blog. Ing." was the exact option I mentioned, and sorry, it's a pain in the keister. Fan Mail...if you mean "Asks," then those aren't rebloggable, and question-answer-done isn't a discussion. *EDIT* Okay, Fan Mail's different, but it's just a PM system. One-on-One conversations are great; that's what I have e-mail for. Fandom conversations on social network sites should really include the fandom folks. So the only thing to do for that on tumble is "Re. Blog. Ing." Which gets messy, especially if you have more than two or three people involved in the conversation.

So, assuming everyone involved puts forth a lot of extra tracking effort, doesn't mind cluttering up their main page with repeat reblogs + whatever new paragraph they added to the discussion, and that every other person in the discussion also doesn't mind filling up their main page with the same reblogs, and that you watch your posts tag like a hawk, and watch EVERYONE ELSE'S like a hawk to see all the other threads that the conversational road is going down...you can have almost the same sort of conversation you can have on LJ.

That "proper amount of effort" is a hell of a lot, and calling it that is pretty condescending to folks who are maybe working multiple jobs and trying to have a social life, etc. I put a lot of effort into tumblr, and while I like it for the easy image sharing and the lols, it saps way more of my time than LJ ever did.

And I'm not asking for a "silver platter"--no need to be rude. I'm asking for...huh, surprisingly enough, what we've got here on dreamwidth or LJ. Or heck, numerous other sites that allow for discussions. It's not a new or exclusive thing. I'm not asking that of tumblr, it's a completely different animal, and until they allow nested comments (or if you've got someone like the DCWKA blog, where they also add in a Disqus option), it's never going to allow for extended conversations between multiple people who don't feel like devoting their entire span of free time to having those discussions. I'm saying that, well, tumblr being what it is, why not let fandom stride both formats just a little bit? Tumblr for art and quick stuff, LJ for fic and discussions and the like.

So really, you didn't answer my question at all, or rather you did and the answer is "no"--there is no easy way to have a discussion on tumblr. That doesn't mean you have to jump to tumblr's defense in all snarkery. I like tumblr. But it Has Its Problems. Everything does. And bringing that up isn't wrong.

Tumblr is not easy to use. Yes it's usable, but it is NOT user-friendly for fan discussions, period. You basically said as much in your first (amazingly rude) response to <user name="truxillogical>. It's completely understandable imo that someone would prefer to keep most of their fannish activity in a place that is more conducive to meta and discussions if that's what they prefer, not to mention one that doesn't take up so much <i>time</i>. The time thing is the main reason I don't spend much time over there. It's not what I'd rather be doing with the time that I have.

If someone doesn't like Tumblr, they don't like it. You can't force them on it and you can't force them to love it. They don't need to justify jackshit to you. They hate the reblogging feature and the effort it takes to get what they want, they hate it. Period. Fucking grow up and deal with it.

Tumblr is not easy for everyone, nor does everyone care to put in this extra effort that you are demanding. They are not expecting silver platters- they do not use Tumblr. It is as simple as that. Accept it and move on.

Hahaha. You didn't listen at all. Seriously I have seen and had more complex meta stuff go on over on tumblr than ever on lj. Because unlike lj, you have more chances of seeing someone who you might never follow, might never have heard of make a brilliant bit of commentary. I interact with MORE people on tumblr than I ever did on lj where a lot of people just didn't talk/comment to those they didn't know.

If you don't want to learn how to do new things, that's your fault, not Tumblr's.

Honestly, do you read every comment here on Fandomsecrets? Never repeated what someone else has said?

What are you looking for here? I mean, meta is available when you look in the tags, sure you have to just let it go after a little while, but then the next thing that comes up. If someone reacts to your specific bit, then you'll receive a notification.

Look, I don't care if you join Tumblr, that's up to you. But unable to get 'meta' seems a weak justification. I've gotten more access to my fandom's meta there than anywhere else and not just 'so-and-so is so hot' but how my favourite characters are self-destructive or loyal and why that happens and deep analysis of episodes.

Tumblr enables people to talk to each other even though they have fastly divergent interests far more easily than LJ/DW where it's all very neatly sectioned out. People seem far more set apart here. Sure, you sacrifice commitment, but sometimes, perhaps like the person the secret maker's talking about I don't want that commitment and I feel pressured to return it. I don't feel that on Tumblr.

Personally, I think that's more a sticking point for you than meta (and possibly the interface issue itself? We're having problems there.) and that's fair.

tl;dr: yes, actually, you can have a discussion, just you have to treat it differently than you might on here.

I'm on tumblr. I love it for images, and for jokes and things like that. Not so much discussions.

Personally, I like the "set apartness"--I would say "organization" of lj/dw. I feel more pressure on Tumblr, and it kills me that there's no easy way to respond to a dialogue. If I post a picture I drew on Livejournal, people can comment on it, or ask a question, and I can respond right there in the thread, even just as simple as a "thank you." If someone comments on a picture I drew and posted on tumblr, I respond by reblogging the picture, and over and over. And here's the thing--I draw to start dialogue with people. That's what I love about fanart; the opportunity for dialogue. But re-re-re-reblogging my own art to continue a conversation looks stupid and clutters my main page.

I see meta on tumblr, but not as much discussion on it. A lot of people'll reblog, maybe one in 30 will add something to it. So...what, if I see someone posted a cool fan theory, I guess I can go open all 20,000 notes, wade through the likes, and check the reblogs to see if any of them had anything else to say on the subject...it's not ideal. It's possible, but it's not ideal.

And I don't read every comment on F!S. But I do read every comment on the secrets I was interested in. Sometimes, if a discussion looks good, I'll keep a tab up and refresh it later in the evening to see what else has been added to it. All you do is hit "expand" and the whole thread is open and ready to be read.

AMEN. In a world of intuitive places to have long/detailed conversations, I don't get why I should feel bad for putting time into those instead of spending forever on something that is the very opposite of intuitive. Long chain of reblogged conversation, especially with multiple participants? It's really, really hard for me to keep track of who is saying what. That's as inhibiting to me as some aspects of LJ/DW culture/interface are to other people.

Tumblr is a good image blogging/reblogging platform, but it's just not working for me for the rest - and contrary to what some would say, that's not for lack of time effort. I experimented, it didn't work, and now I just use it very casually, but for anything where it matters to me to be able to have a meaty discussion, I'll post or look for stuff here or on LJ.
