I'm not sure what you are getting at. Are you saying that the problem fandoms have are not so bad if you take a look at all fans and not just the ones in Tumblr and LJ communities? Or are you saying that a small number of fans in tumblr and LJ communities are giving the greater fandom a bad name?

I read it as they were ashamed to be connected to fandom because, outside fandom, people inside all kind of come off...a bit over the top? If you read anything written about fandom from the outside perspective they do paint everyone with the same brush and well...I can see where the OP would wish that, fandom as a whole, would become a bit more self aware after reading enough of that stuff.

Well, this is the genesis for my "what happens in fandom, stays in fandom" feelings. I mean, there's no reason not to be fannish because outsiders are judgey, but we don't need to be fannish in non-fannish places. That's just kind of TMI.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing - that's part of why I tend to keep my fandom stuff online and separate from offline life. I'm just saying I can understand why it could be massive second hand embarrassment, at least when it comes to the harsh lampooning the articles do. [And considering the fact that the *kindest* of those was on cracked? That should give you an idea of how harsh that is.]

It does seem that every few months someone stumbles on fandom for the first time and wigs out over it. But I think it's passed a bit of turning point in the last few years, where whenever that happens, for every "omg there are people like this?" there's someone else going, "Welcome to the internet."

For better or worse, fandom isn't in it's own box anymore. I'm pretty sure it's one of those things that the more people know about it, the more they are used to it, until it becomes merely geeky instead of horrifying.

But until that happens, I'll keep my hobby away from my real life.

Eh, I think certain aspects [certain kinks, and possibly rpf] will keep it from being too comfortable a thing for most people...but Kinda yeah. Like I said, I'm just pointing out where the OP could be coming from instead of saying what my actual feelings toward it are.
