...You know there are male ponies too, right? So if they pointed out that there are gay Bronies, would it not, by your logic, imply sexual attraction then too?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*is the norm, whoops.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't imply sexual attraction so much as discerns, "Gay men are not the only men who like bright colors and musical numbers and girly stuff." The media finds this novel/odd/contrary to expectation, so they point it out. ("LOL even scruffy unwashed lumberjacks like puppies and cupcakes!" or something.)

Not to mention it's such an arbitrary thing to point out. Why does it matter? Oh right, because homosexual men are naturally all about unicorns and ponies and pink. /s

You wonder how much of it is a defense mechanism from the male bronies themselves.

I always think it's weird when Rainbow Dash is refered to as the 'gay' pony. It's a huge stereotype that really doesn't do anyone any favors. There are lesbians like Fluttershy, Rarity, Twilight, etc, and there are heterosexual women like Rainbow. IDK. Of course MLP would never have a canonically gay character to begin with, so, to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
And there are lesbians like Rainbow Dash, it does them a favor to see a character like them all decked out in rainbows. There aren't actually that many butch/sporty lesbian characters out there, or even butch/sporty characters that fans just like picturing being like them in that way. Heck, MLP is great just for having more than one traditionally tomboyish female character, and they're both lead characters!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Rainbow Dash is just Firefly with RD's character sheet. If JW didn't have the copyrights to the name "Firefly" RD would have bee pink with blue hair. :p

This.

...An adult lesbian should really not be looking for representation from a little girl's cartoon.

There are lesbians like Fluttershy, Rarity, Twilight, etc,

None of them has a rainbow theme, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
...But Rainbow Dash's original personality is not like Rainbow in the show. Rainbow Dash is just Firefly, and the only reason why she has a rainbow design is because 'Firefly' was copyrighted.

um, think it's more implying that it'd be totally normal and expected for gays to be fans of MLP because it's just so cute and girly and pink and that's totally what us queers are all about

media is homophobic is a lot more likely explanation than an approval of cartoon beastiality

The logic leap you make where heterosexual male fans = being sexually attracted to the ponies doesn't make much sense to me.

Uh, pretty sure the media isn't trying to imply that sexual attraction to the ponies is normal in any way. You don't have to worry about that.

To be honest, what they're evoking by saying that is the idea that GAY men like sparkles and prettiness and femininity, so them liking this show would be ~understandable. But this straight guy stuff is a real mystery!

They need to research "moe" tbqh.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think they make a point of saying heterosexual males because it bypasses our typical expectations for masculine behavior. Stereotypically, gay men like girly things. Straight men do not. I think that's more of what they are focusing on above anything else.

I don't think you'd get very far in the Transformers fandom. Or, well, any alien/non-human fandom. And there are quite a few.

It seems to me, that the main reason media outlets point out the heterosexuality of 'Bronies' on the whole, is the fact that... Back in the day, when "My Little Pony" first came around in 1983, it really truly was a brand marketed to girls. So, if a boy back in 83' expressed an interest in "My Little Pony", or any of the toylines and/or cartoons that were being marketed expressly to girls at the time, then that boy, would more than likely be viewed as a "sissy". In the 80's, girls were supposed to love "My Little Pony", "Jem and the Holograms", "Rainbow Brite", etc. While boys in the 80's, were expected to love cartoons like "G.I. Joe", "The Transformers", "ThunderCats", etc. tl;dr Residual, "*this* is what your ~supposed~ to like, and we're going to market to you based on your gender" cartoon/toyline norms; apparently never die.

That's not what they're saying at all. They're saying gay men seem more likely to enjoy something girly like MLP.

I think it implies that the writer is emphasising they're not in other ways weird. Which is also gross.

Yeah that is weird because who said all bronies are heterosexual?

It's worth pointing out for the backwards people who think that "if a guy likes ponies he MUST be gay!!!" but that's more along the lines of "stop stereotyping gay people" than being about actual bronies.

Also, heterosexual implies attraction to the ponies? What the actual...? I'm a straight woman, does that mean I want to bang Big Macintosh or Braeburn or Soaren? (Hint: I don't.)
