all I remember about these books is that the narrator's friend pretends to be the ghost of a monk and scares the shit out of him. is that in the movie (TV series? whatever that is)? because if it is, I might actually watch it...

There was an episode of the series that covered the Raines Abbey Ghost. The acter who played Tristan, the practical joker, was Peter Davison, who was Doctor #5 (Doctor Who).

Pretty fun family entertainment.

Yay, JH secret! Pity it's not about the books.
I see where you're coming from, but I can't imagine this being the case neither in fiction nor IRL. The nature of their relationship wouldn't allow it, I suspect. Besides, it breaks my heart to picture this, since I find their friendship awesome.

In fact, this is the single most mentally healthy, happy and stable character I've encountered (and I'd like to believe that the author was like that), and so this is probably one of those rare books where any kind of fucked-upness seems totally inappropriate.
