I'd be interested in reading this! Do you have a link?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding. Link, OP?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'd also like to read it. :)

You could probably make the same claim about all comics and animation

BTW, what is the name of the manga this image is from? I forget what it's called but it looks a lot like that manga I saw once about a family raising an autistic child

It's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/With_the_Light

(never actually read it myself, but intend to)

I think this is With the Light, which is one about raising an autistic child.

Yes, people are correct, this is "With the Light". The manga is quite good (I have the first 7 or so volumes, which are the giant sized type, about 3x the size of a regular manga) but sadly it is unfinished at the author died before finishing it. The manga volumes also include personal essays by people who have had experiences with autism (family members or similar) which help mirror many of the experiences detailed in the manga.
It is a "josei" series, so intended for older female readers, but I think it's a good series for anyone with an interest in the subject.
There is also a J-drama "Hikari no Tomo".

I feel like I came off as a little overenthusiastic here, but it is a series I really enjoyed and I think it treats its subject matter with a great deal of respect, especially taking into consideration that in the time/place of the setting, disabilities were very misunderstood. I'm glad there appears to be an interest in this thread about the series!

I have the first seven volumes myself, and I know there's an eighth out there somewhere...but do you know many of the giant ones there are? The only reference I can find to the number of volumes tells me about the smaller ones (of which I believe there are 15; but I could be wrong).

I'm glad to see some enthusiasm for this manga, by the way. It's one of my favorite manga series, and I think it's a really great read on the subject.

Eh, I tend to notice anime/manga are more expressive than western comics (not so much animation, since all animation is rooted in exaggeration). I can see where someone who has autism would prefer reading something like Naruto to your typical DC comic.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Autistics"? Not trying to start something, I just have never heard it used in plural.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
One autistic, many autistics. Why would that be weird or questionable?

A substantial amount of American disability awareness focuses on people first language.

That is to say it would be 'people with autism' as they believe it's an element of themselves, not a defining feature.

Of course this isn't the case in other countries, for example the UK where they disagree with that language structure, as the general thought is that the condition is a fundamental part of themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's true and certainly something I've encountered in my own pre-service training, but person-first language isn't preferred by all disability populations (nor by all individuals within those populations). While we're not as unanimous on it as, say, the Deaf community, autistic people ourselves are pretty diverse in our preferences on that front, and a significant amount of us actively dislike person-first constructions.

(For myself, I personally prefer 'autistic' over 'with autism', but overall I care more about how people treat me than what language they use.)

DA

Eh, I've only really heard "autistics" used in a sort of demeaning manner.

Maybe OP is ESL.
I am, and before reading the other comments, I didn't see how there could be a connotation to "autistics" rather than "people with autism".

This is interesting, and I love the manga you're referencing...it's one of the things that made me start looking into autism and wondering whether I was on the spectrum as well, simply because of how I relate to many of the social issues discussed (and a few other things, but the social issues are a biggie).

I liked seeing this.

I love this manga so much! It makes me happy to see other people know about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Do they? I wasn't aware of that. Seems counter-intuitive.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing by "simplified," they mean "less subtle/more overt/more visually exaggerated," which would (for most people) make it easier to recognize. As an autistic person, it makes sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Stereotyped, clear bodylanguage and facial expression? Fuck yeah. What's counter-intuitive about it?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
i have Asperger's and the big eye little mouth faces of anime and manga characters creep me the fuck out. Uncanny valley bigtime.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
Weird. I have Aspergers and I almost always find anime/manga trite, repetitive and boring.
