I'm not sure I believe in the idea of soulmates, but I really believed Donna when she said she would travel with him forever. Other companions don't seem like the type who would or could do that (and that's not a bad thing at all, mind you! quality isn't measured in years), but Donna I definitely could.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
This! soulmates isn't the word I'd used but yeah I think Donna could have stayed with him forever. Or at least stayed with 10 for as long as he was 10. I'm not totally convinced she would have stayed with the Eleventh Doctor if she'd been there through his change. Different personalities and all that.

Well, Rose got on with Ten very well, and the classic companions all got on well with a different regeneration of the Doctor than they started out with (er...I'm not so sure about Six and Peri, since she was rather shy and Six was pretty loud...and Tegan/Nyssa/Adric barely had time to get to know Four before he regenerated). And Amy had a great time constantly making fun of Eleven and yelling at him when he did stupid shit (*cough* The Beast Below *cough*), so it's not a stretch to say Donna wouldn't have as well.

But yeah -- Donna and Ten were really uniquely well-suited for each other, given their specific strengths and weaknesses. And I seriously doubt Ten would have gone into meltdown during the specials if he hadn't lost Donna.

AYRT

I don't disagree exactly but I don't totally agree either... but I'm to tired right now (and possibly feverish) to come up with a more coherent explanation for why ...

da

Well, you know, there IS precedent for a companion having a *good* relationship with a second Doctor, but being best with their first Doctor. For example, Seven and Mel were good together, but Mel with her shrillness and bossiness was always best suited to Six. She was really Six's girl. She was the one who could cut through his blustering and get him to drink his carrot juice, metaphorically speaking, and she didn't need to do that anymore with Seven.

I'd also argue that Rose was better suited to Nine than to Ten. Not that she had a bad relationship with Ten at all, they loved each other very much and got along very well, but I think Nine and Rose complimented each other better.

Not everything is black-and-white, all bad or all good and no flexibility or variation in between. It's not all that different from any other stories where one member of a duo goes through dramatic character development -- the friendship changes too.

And on the flip side: I can't imagine Tegan or Turlough with Four (yes, Tegan was in one episode with four, but... well, it was only one); their brash personalities worked a lot better with the more mellow Five. This is especially the case given that they were on the show together. TWO companions like that with Four... O_O

Well now I'm totally going to have to write this, drabble/mini-fic or no.

And the other way around too, like, Sarah Jane had a pretty sweet relationship with Three, but she really clicked with Four because their personalities aligned just right.

It's toooooooooooooooooooo laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate.

I just loved Donna and Ten because they there was no romantic notions on either part. They were awesome traveling bros. And I miss them so much. ;_;

All this Donna love lately is magic me so nostalgic and sad and I just want her back :'(

I just love these two to death. I do ship them, though I ship the Doctor with other people too. But I'm perfectly happy with their relationship being platonic as well. David and Catharine had so much chemistry, and Donna was such a good foil for Ten. She could tell him off when he needed it and remind him that individuals matter. Her perspective was very useful, and Ten was so much less irritating when he was around her.

I loath the way Donna's story ended. I think it was the single worst written and most offensive thing in New Who. I still can't bring myself to watch the end of Journey's End. I always stop before it gets to that part. I love the Doctor!Donna part. That was awesome. But how Donna's end was written was just bad writing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think Rose and TenToo's ending was worse-written than Donna's ending (if only because Donna's ending, despite being despicable, was at least heartfelt and emotionally poignant and there was logic to it even if that logic was horribly twisted, whereas Rose and TenToo was just "lolwhut?") but I agree about the offensiveness part :\ Makes my skin fucking crawl...

Y'know, the worst part of Journey's End is that it wasn't pure crap: there were enough awesome bits in it to give the audience a taste of how good it could have been before yanking it away and handing us horse dung instead.

Journey's End is actually one of my favorite episodes until the end parts. A lot of it is really awesome. I love everyone together. I love the basic plot. I love Donna being awesome. And then they had to screw it up with that ending.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I knoooooow, it reminded me of Sarah Jane and Four, and how after a while he started going around introducing her as "This is Sarah Jane, she's my best friend." (something he rarely ever did with anyone else, if I recall) and they were just so companiony and cute and friendly I wanted them to have adventures forever ㅜㅜ

I do mostly think she was best with Four though, not sure she would have suited with Five, and I feel the same about Donna and Ten ^^

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I ever really thought about them being soul mates, but I did think of Donna as the ultimate companion in new who. She just seemed to give the Doctor exactly what he needed, not what he wanted, or not what someone may think he might need, but she was the right person to keep him in check in every situation.
intrigueing: (donna's long streak of nothing)

I seriously hate the mindwiping scene in Journey's End with the power of a furnace, but that bit where Donna realizes that it's not going to be okay and just looks at him and says "I was gonna be with you forever..." never, ever, ever fails to put a lump in my throat, because I believed it. So much. :'(

100% agreed. And the way he says, "I know" totally implies he wanted her to be. :(

All the recent Donna secrets are making me want to watch her season again. Also, making me wish I could forget her season because damn was her 'ending' depressing...

I like to headcanon that sometime later on, the Doctor went to see Donna again and gave her a chance to decide for herself whether she wanted to die or forget. I know he said that "if she remembers for a minute, she'll burn" but in The End of Time she DID remember and she just did that energy-shooty thing and fainted, so I think there could possibly be a window of time that he could use to actually ask her...

I like Donna plenty, but I really liked a lot of the other companions as well. Sarah Jane's relationship was in particularly awesome. I think they really understood each other.

I like Rose Tyler and the Doctor as a romantic pair, but I don't think she could travel with him forever. I love heartache for my pairs, but that much... no, she had a proper send off IMO.

But Donna?

Oh yes. Donna. I still feel really, really sad when I remember that she doesn't remember :( Of the New Who companions, she was the best (yes even thought I like Rose Tyler and the Doctor in a pairing sense, I think Donna... yeah Donna was awesome).

What's crazy is I wasn't sure I was going to like Donna. My first taste of Catherine Tate was from The Office (U.S.) and I COULD NOT STAND the character. Then I watched DW and was like "What?! She's awesome!" and now I like her character on The Office way better. Weird isn't it?
