Why isn't Sam wearing something geekier? Sam is supposed to be a huge geek. :/

I feel like Sam is more of a nerd, and Dean is more of a geek. That's the impression I get, anyway.

Maybe it's been too long since I've watched the show and I'm confusing things in my head, but I always assumed that while Sam was more outwardly nerdy, he still liked a lot of the same things as Dean.

IDK, I feel like their characterization is all over the place in terms of what they fan.

One example for me is Dean not knowing who the Ramones are and Sam having to tell him.

I don't think the show writers have gone for any consistent anything in terms of that over the years.

.....what? When? Dean mentioned Johnny Ramone in S2.

No, you're right. It's in Hollywood Babylon, and I was misremembering that Dean didn't know who Johnny Ramone was.

There's something though that clearly I cannot remember LOL where one or the other of them misses some kind of pop culture reference that seems an obvious fit for them. Which since I can't remember it, does not matter. LOL

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe when Dean had to explain the movie Poltergeist to Sam? Or when neither Sam nor Bobby knew of "Star Trek 4, Save the Whales!"

I don't think those are it, but maybe I just imagined the whole thing. LOL

Also, not knowing George and Gracie is a travesty of the deepest kind.

you mean like this?

UNF.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
He really isn't though? Sam is good with technology and likes his shiny gadgets but Dean has always been the really geeky one who made Star Trek and LotR references and gets a really big kick out of dressing up in costume while Sam sort of rolls his eyes at it.

Sam's kind of a classic academic nerd in a lot of ways and will squee over old books and is aces at research but Dean is the more fandomy geeky one. There's crossover there, of course, and Sam occasionally enjoys geeky stuff just like Dean is actually really good at research and sometimes gets into it, but it's never been that Sam is the geeky one.

Besides Sam got to wear a costume as well and he had an adorable ponytail. :)

What I said to another anon is that maybe I'm confused because it's been so long since I've watched the show, but I thought that Sam DID enjoy some of the same geeky stuff Dean does. Dean is definitely the more outwardly geeky one, but I thought Sam was a bit of a closet geek as well as a nerd.

He used to get a lot of his references, anyway. (I think...)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

He got the references but he wasn't the one making them most of the time. And sometimes I got the impression that he sort of teased Dean about it - if Dean was getting openly geeky about something, Sam would be kind of eyerolly about it because sometimes the younger sibling has to be a brat. (Spoken as a younger sibling myself here! XD) I always found it endearing and very brotherly.

But costumes in particular are definitely more of a Dean thing than a Sam thing. I can think of three episodes where Dean has gotten all flaily about getting to dress up in period costume and none where Sam was overly excited about it. He had to be dragged into dressing up in Old Western garb that one time, even. Not that Sam doesn't look really good when all dressed up, of course!

kind of unrelated but there was some meta about how dean loves dressing up because he never got much of a chance to do it as a kid, but he probably made sure sam would have been able to go trick-or-treating or whatever if he wanted to.

that shit still makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:53 am (UTC)(link)

I like to think that Dean likes to dress up because he just finds it cool and fun, but there's a sad part of me that sort of curls up and wants to cry because of how sucky a childhood Dean had. Sam's was awful too, but at least he had Dean to try to make it better.

Though now I'm curious as to whether either of them got to do much trick or treating. Isn't Halloween supposedly one of the nights the walls between worlds are thinnest and the dead walk the earth etc, etc? Not that SPN has ever really paid attention to it but if there is a higher degree of supernatural incidents on Halloween, I bet John would have made them stay in.

well in the pilot episode sam says something along the lines of not liking costumes or not liking that time of year or something since his mom died on nov. 2nd. plus there was that ep in s4 involving samhain...

that's a good point though, but now i'm imagining john being out on a hunt and leaving them in the house and sam begging to go out because all the other kids are and dean just can't say no and he makes sam as good a costume he can and they go out and hope their dad isn't back early and....

He got the references but he wasn't the one making them most of the time.

I didn't remember him making near as many as Dean, but I did remember him catching the references. At least I didn't imagine that.

And I'm sure he teases Dean about it sometimes, that's how their relationship is. (As well as Dean teasing him back about being a nerd. It IS endearing and adorable and one of my favorite things about them.)

I barely remember the Old West episode (I hated that season tbh) but that doesn't particularly surprise me. Dean has always liked dressing up, even if it wasn't in geeky stuff. (I'm thinking of the Priest outfits.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, he got the references. :)

S6 wasn't my favorite season either, though I prefer that immensely to the season that followed. I'm enjoying S8 much, much more than either.

I don't think Dean really liked dressing up in the priest outfits? Maybe because priests aren't all that ~badass and cool~ (with a few exceptions) or maybe because of Dean's issues with religion. Cowboys and 1940s FBI agents and brave knights who whack people with sticks (or even gym teachers) are more to his speed. :)

I thought Sam was like, "We are NOT dressing up as priests!" and Dean cackled with glee over the fact they were doing something so 'wrong'. ...This is probably my memory failing me again. :( Oh well.

I haven't watched the show since the start of season seven so I can't comment on anything after that, but it seems the fandom on a whole likes this season better than the previous one, so that's good!

he gets references, but most of the ones he goes "heh" about are things like star wars and star trek, things that are so entwined in pop culture it's unlikely even someone with a life like sam's wouldn't get it. like sam hasn't had to watch the star wars trilogy a billion times over because dean had it on in the motel room. sam's a different sort of geek than dean, imo.

You have a point, yea. Seems I might not remember the show as well as I thought I did.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Sam made the World of Warcraft reference in Like a Virgin.

I don't even know which episode that is, was it in s6? I completely stopped watching it about halfway through. And since when was WoW not a significant pop culture icon? Maybe not up the degree of the other ones I listed, but even so.
