Thank you? It sounds like you are agreeing with me!

I am agreeing with you!

http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/747557.html?thread=623260453#cmt623260453 I'm guessing this was your two cents? If so, I totally agree: Ready to Die is an amazing album and the one I always recommend when trying to explain to someone how rap can be an artform. I also go crazy recommending Dr. Dre and Tupac.

DA

I like this linked comment. Sums up my take on rap, and I also love recommending Dre, Biggie and Tupac to people. :)

nayrt (this is my first time posting itt)

that was me! and yeah, I don't know. it was kind of a tricky and in some ways frustrating thread to take part in it, because a lot of rap is legitimately misogynistic - even a lot of rap that I think is really good and smart - and it's hard to say that someone can still listen to it anyway. If someone wants to say that Biggie is misogynistic and that it bothers them so much that they can't listen to them, I think that's a legitimate view, and I can't really disagree with it. And then the other thing is that I'm very much a casual rap listener, and so it's not like I have a deep knowledge-base of the genre to draw on - I mean, Ready to Die and Illmatic are great albums; they're also probably the most canonical, well-known, classic rap albums there are. So I don't have the expertise to really talk on it with a ton of knowledge and depth, so it's difficult.

But, yeah, I stand by what I said there. I think you have to look at the way that the subject matter is dealt with. And I think Ready To Die is an amazing album in terms of the musical sound and in terms of Biggie's lyricism and in terms of the whole thing. It's so good.

err, I mean "it's hard to say that someone SHOULD still listen to it anyway"

What I mean is, if someone specifically sets the condition that they want something that's not misogynistic, it's hard for me to reply by saying that they should listen to something that could arguably be called misogynistic, no matter how good I think it is. I mean, I don't think it's absurd to say that rap really does have a problem with misogyny.
