re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of disheartening to read everyone generalizing rap as this wholly misogynistic genre. You do realize that misogyny literally exists in almost all media we consume? That's the joy of living in a patriarchal society.

It's also great to see that the general attitude towards rap is that it's only likeable if it's been made by white people, because that makes it "intelligent" and "worth listening to", unlike rap/hip-hop/etc made by black people, because that's all about "hitting bitches" and "spending money" and "thug life". Just because a narrative isn't applicable to your life or isn't something you've experienced or understand doesn't make it insignificant. Rap is music that was created by black people for black people, and you coming out saying that the only "good rap" is rap made by white people is fucking dumb. Stop.

(People who recommended Lupe Fiasco, Biggie Smalls, etc, I'm not coming at you.)
(Blah blah blah people have different taste, that's fine. Stop generalizing about a genre you apparently know nothing about.)

Anon. I do agree with your main point. But I really am not seeing that attitude here. Seems like a lot of people just don't listen to much rap and don't have many recs. And that's... okay?

1. This is a good comment.

2. How bad is this aforementioned rap thread? Is it worth sifting through for newer artist recs?

3. Did anyone bingo out on the not-getting-it and suggest listening to rap in a language you don't understand?

Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
2) there were three rap threads, I said my piece in the rap/country is not for me thread and read the rest of the comments and didn't see any misogynistic comments. didn't read the rap recs thread so I don't know how that thread is. third one is a request for help in finding what rap sounds were causing an anon pain so.

Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
1. Thank you, I appreciate that!
2. I wouldn't say it's that horrible in the grand scheme of things, but reading the same ignorant comments over and over just kind of grated on me to the point that I felt the need to say something. I posted the threads above if you'd like to take a look but I didn't see anything recommended that I haven't seen before?
3. They certainly did! (http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/747557.html?thread=623443749#cmt623443749)

I am agreeing with you!

http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/747557.html?thread=623260453#cmt623260453 I'm guessing this was your two cents? If so, I totally agree: Ready to Die is an amazing album and the one I always recommend when trying to explain to someone how rap can be an artform. I also go crazy recommending Dr. Dre and Tupac.

people who hold this opinion clearly have only had experience in mainstream rap/hip-hop, and while it's really easy to only end up hearing that - since it's almost the only kind of rap on the radio and tv - it's really no excuse for blanket judging an entire genre of music. it should be common sense that there's more than 50 cent out there.

i disagree that rap is just for black people tho?? idk if that's what you were trying to imply but ??????

Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think they were trying to say that listeners tended to place a higher intellectual value on rap produced by white people than on rap produced by black people, and part of that might be because of a cultural dissonance of middle-class white people trying to relate (and failing) to songs about poor black "ghetto" life. But instead of simply recognizing the dissonance, they just devalue it. It's not that it's just for black people, but that some things by black artists can be hard for white listeners to relate to because they don't have a similar experience.

"It's not that it's just for black people, but that some things by black artists can be hard for white listeners to relate to because they don't have a similar experience."

I really don't agree with this, at all. I mean, I really, really think that, past a certain point, the things that rappers are talking about are basically universal human emotions. It comes from a different part of life in a lot of ways, but it goes to human themes.

I mean, we're talking about a board that's full of people who can relate to stories about people who can cast spells, about people and aliens flying around on spaceships, about people fighting vampires, about people fighting wars with sword and shield and horse, about all these completely alien things, and finding meaning in them and being able to relate to them. Are you really going to tell me that Notorious BIG is more alien than Spock and Worf? Are you really going to tell me that the world that Nas, or Scarface, or Jay-Z is talking about is more bizarre and difficult to relate to than Homestuck is? Are the things that rappers are talking about really that much more removed from our experience? I find it really difficult to believe that.

Haha, I was gong to say 'but I recommended Lupe Fiasco....?' (I recced him and Talib in the thread.)

I seem to have missed the drama, but I agree with this. And sometimes the 'white rap' isn't event that good anyway. (I do love me some Eminem though, but Relapse just sucked.)

Like I said in my original comment - there's plenty good rap out there, just tons more garbage to wade through.

Eh, Mike Shinoda is not white, neither is the lead rapper of Flobots. Black people don't all make the same hip hop music. I prefer some of it more than others and, yes, what I prefer tends to be about different subject matter than the kind that typically shows up in the top 40.

Though I could say that about just about any genre of music I enjoy.

And Fort Minor and Flobots were recommended like a million times yesterday.

I didn't get that impression...? I don't think that people recommending white rappers means that they're dissing black ones. Rap has become a very large and varied genre over the past decade and it is filled with all kinds of people of all races that reaches many demographics.

And I saw that the OP of the rap thread said they didn't want misogynistic rap recs but they didn't say ALL rap was that way and admitted they had little experience with rap and that from what other people had told them, rap was a more diverse genre than they realized. lbr though, I'm a fairly big rap fan but even I can admit that misogyny is more prevalent/intense (I think intensity may be the real problem here. I can think of a lot of sexist pop/rock/country songs but the sexism often isn't as "in your face" as it can be in rap music) in rap than it is in some other genres. Does that mean it's in every rap song? No. Does that mean the majority of rappers say disgusting things about women? Well I'm not sure but I'd like to think not.

I think it mostly meant that people in the thread didn't know or listen to any black rap artists.

I think everything else you're saying is mostly true. Although there are really good female rap artists out there and I wish I knew more about them to recommend but I'll just throw out Azealia Banks. Also Big Freedia isn't really a rapper but I don't care everyone should listen to Big Freedia I mean seriously

Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Azealia Banks is brilliant :)

I haven't given Big Freedia a try, but I think I will now!

I agree that female rappers should get more of the spotlight. Rap is just such a male dominated genre (or at least men are the ones who the lion's share of attention). But I'm hopeful that more ladies will start breaking through in the coming years

I left two recs myself, one black rapper and one white rapper (of which the former is much better known). I find it hard to believe that anyone who likes rap at all could not listen to black rap artists; I mean, that's most of the genre...

Next you'll say white people can't do real jazz because people used to be racist about Cab Calloway.

boohoo, it's considered misogynistic for a good fucking reason, if it bothers you try to pressure artist to be less sexist fucks.
